Coffee & A Wedding: Amy & Dwight

Amy and Dwight were so much fun! As I am sure you can tell from the pictures these two and their friends are a riot to be around and it was a pleasure for me to be able to be a part of their day. We started out at a coffee shop the girls have spent a lot of time hanging out in, and it was a wonderful idea because I absolutely love the photos we got there! Then we stopped off at this little park and shot a few more photos. The actual wedding photo shoot part of our day was by far the quickest I have ever shot. We had a whopping 15 minutes to shoot our photos! lol. As you can imagine the shoot was peddle to the metal trying to get as many pictures as we could in such a short time. To my surprise we were able to get what we needed and everyone was pretty relaxed :). Amy and Dwight seem like the type of people that no matter what the situation is, they will find a way to make it fun and that’s exactly what this wedding was.

Thanks for the fun wedding! Rob

Mild Winter Moment

I was downtown yesterday meeting a guy about thing. I had my camera with me so I grabbed a couple quick shots. The weather in Calgary this winter has been pretty good lately. As you can see from the pictures it’s not exactly what comes to mind when one thinks of winter in the city. It was 48 degrees (9C) in Calgary yesterday and it looks to be staying around that mark for the next little while. That is good photography weather and I plan on taking advantage of it :).

Freak Snow

This picture is from back in September! We had a freak snow storm here in Calgary this year and this guy did not seem to stoked to be walking around in it haha. I could tell he was a nice relaxed kind of guy though, because I had to get extremely close to him to get this shot and he didn’t mind. I was shooting an ultra wide angle lens at 16mm (actually 24mm on the crop sensor camera), which isn’t exactly your ideal street photography focal length. I was actually just there to get a skyline shot, then I saw him walking along and decided to snap a photo.

Fave Apartment Building

This is my favourite apartment building in Calgary. A wonderful example of pre-war one architecture that is very hard to come by in this modern city.

A Nice Night in Calgary

I went out and shot some photos with a buddy of mine last night. We walked around 17th Ave shooting random things and then made our way to the top of Ramsay to get some city shots. Not a bad picture and it was a nice night to take it :).

Winter or Summer ?

The weather has gone completely INSANE in Calgary the last few days. I have been waking up to WINTER! Yet it is still 100% summer! I have experienced the most awful weather since moving here haha, but I have yet to snap and pack my bags to head back to the coast. I’m sure that day will come, but it aint today ;). Here are a couple of pictures from yesterdays winter blast.

Calgary Uptown Eastside

I shot this photo of Eastside Calgary last night. The look out where I took this picture is just a few blocks away from my house, so I figured rather than watch Seinfeld or Frasier for the millionth time, I’d go out and have some fun. Right after I had set up my camera and tripod the tallest building in the middle’s alarm started going off, something I had never seen before. There was a bunch of flashing lights going up and down the building inside. I thought you might be able to tell from the picture, but it looks rather normal to me. In any case, I still like the picture and it was cool to see.

Family Time

This nice little family is taking a look back at my last post haha. They were actually pretty nice, I was across the street shooting and they were admiring the view. At one point they turned around to me and asked me if they were “in my shot”, and offered to move if they were. Little did they know, they were the shot! ;).

Canon 28mm f/1.8

Camera: Canon 5Dii & 50mm 1.4 ~ Settings 1/15th – f/3.5 – ISO 2500

I picked up a new lens recently that I had been thinking about getting for quite sometime. I was torn between the Canon 28mm f/1.8 & the Sigma version. I decided to go with the Canon version because of the size and weight (smaller & lighter). The lens performs decent wide open as you can see from the shot of my son bellow, however if you are pixel peeping on some printed letters at 1.8 you might not be all that impressed. With that said, real world use in regular type pictures are all good wide open.

On a side note, the lens came with the filter on it and I am kind of moving away from them at the moment. I was going to just take it off, but thought I might leave it on for a bit and see how I feel. The extra protection is nice, but I think it looks kind of ridiculous with the filter on it haha. I will do a full post on this subject in the future.

Big Zoom (Sigma 50-500mm)

Sigma Bigma 50-50mm zoom lens bokeh - Rob Moses Photography

Camera: 5D mark ii & 50mm 1.4 ~ Settings: 1/50th – f/1.4 – ISO 1250

Let me start off by saying this is not a full in-depth review of the Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5 -6.3 APO DG OS HSM zoom, but rather a quick look.

The other night I was out shooting some skyline shots from a good distance from downtown and I thought this might be a good opportunity to show the insane zoom range of this lens. All though these conditions were not great for image quality review, I can tell you from previous use of this lens that things get a little on the soft side at 500mm. However, when your able to go from 50 to 500 without switching lenses you gotta let somethings slide. The OS (optical stabilizer) on this lens is great! You can actually use it hand-held throughout the range. I would suggest using a mono pod with this lens though, as your arms will get a radical work out lifting this heavy beast. In short, I like this lens. The image quality is great on the shorter side and get’s a little soft near the end, but I can live with that.

I’ll do a full review of this lens sometime in the future.

I like city pictures when the frame is completely filled with buildings! I especially like this particular picture I took in Seattle because I think the American flag is best looking flag out there. And I love Seattle! haha. This was shot from my favourite spot to take pictures in Seattle, Kerry Park 🙂
