Still Skateboarding

A lot of things in life change, somethings don’t. I have been riding around on my skateboard since I was around 8 years old. At times I skated more than others, but it has always been a part of my life and I’m sure it always will be in one way or another.

I shot these photos last night with the help of a friend. I set up the shot with on flash to camera right. I had my friend hit the shutter button for me while I did the skateboarding. πŸ™‚ Thanks Nathan!

The Sprawl Jump

I was out shooting photos on Friday night and ended up at this place. I thought a near by art piece would make a good fisheye shot, but it turned out to be a bust. Since my other photo idea wasn’t working out I noticed this bench and I thought I might try jumping off it. Since I was wearing a t-shirt of my friend Jermey’s company I thought I’d ditch the jacket in the cold and big up his journalism project (The Sprawl). Jeremey is doing great journalism work here in Calgary and if your into the local political scene you’ll defiantly want to check him out.

To shoot this photo I set up my camera on a tripod at its lowest setting and framed the shot. I set up one Godox V860ii flash sitting on my camera bag to camera right. Then I started jumping around like a crazy person! πŸ˜‰

Autumn in Calgary

I shot this photo a few weeks ago and wasn’t going to share it because I thought it would make a better night shot. Then I figured there is no reason to not share both. I took this picture from the parking garage of a local college (SAIT). I was looking for portrait locations and while I was looking around I just snapped this photo for the heck of it. It aint bad, maybe a little heavy on the parking lot though.

Jawny

I met up with an old friend of mine last night and of course I just had to shoot a few photos of the guy. Catching up with your friends is always fun and taking pictures of people is too. Definitely fun times as always with Jawny!

His First Real Camera

I gave my 6 year old son Cameron his first real camera today. He had been asking me for one for the past 6 months and he was very clear he wanted one like mine with a proper viewfinder, so no point and shoots would do. I told him I would be keeping my eye out for a good deal on a camera for him and today was the day. Cameron is now the happy owner of a good old Canon 20D! A camera I have a lot of experience with, as I shot one for a very long time back in the 20D days. He loves the camera and I think it will suit him just fine while he dips his toes into the wonderful world of photography.

When I gave Cameron the camera he was super excited and happy! I quickly showed him the basics and he ran out the door to shoot photos. I caught up with him about 45 minutes later and he was still wondering around the block taking pictures. We passed by this tree and he ask me to hold his camera. He shot up the tree, I gave him is camera back and he started taking pictures of this dog that was sitting in the grass. I’d say he’s got the right idea about getting a unique shot. Who knows, we just might have another photographer in the family. πŸ™‚

Out in These Streets

I was out kicking around Calgary last night shooting some photos. It wasn’t a particularly nice night for it, because the sky was rather dark, but there were people out and the atmosphere of the city made up for the dark skies. I met 4 different people and we all followed each other on Instagram. The first picture is one of those people. Big up to everyone down to meet someone new on the city streets at night. πŸ™‚

Coffee & A Wedding: Amy & Dwight

Amy and Dwight were so much fun! As I am sure you can tell from the pictures these two and their friends are a riot to be around and it was a pleasure for me to be able to be a part of their day. We started out at a coffee shop the girls have spent a lot of time hanging out in, and it was a wonderful idea because I absolutely love the photos we got there! Then we stopped off at this little park and shot a few more photos. The actual wedding photo shoot part of our day was by far the quickest I have ever shot. We had a whopping 15 minutes to shoot our photos! lol. As you can imagine the shoot was peddle to the metal trying to get as many pictures as we could in such a short time. To my surprise we were able to get what we needed and everyone was pretty relaxed :). Amy and Dwight seem like the type of people that no matter what the situation is, they will find a way to make it fun and that’s exactly what this wedding was.

Thanks for the fun wedding! Rob

Mild Winter Moment

Camera: Nikon D300s & Sigma 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye ~ Settings: f/10 – 1/80th – ISO 500

I was downtown yesterday meeting a guy about thing. I had my camera with me so I grabbed a couple quick shots. The weather in Calgary this winter has been pretty good lately. As you can see from the pictures it’s not exactly what comes to mind when one thinks of winter in the city. It was 48 degrees (9C) in Calgary yesterday and it looks to be staying around that mark for the next little while. That is good photography weather and I plan on taking advantage of it :).

Freak Snow

This picture is from back in September! We had a freak snow storm here in Calgary this year and this guy did not seem to stoked to be walking around in it haha. I could tell he was a nice relaxed kind of guy though, because I had to get extremely close to him to get this shot and he didn’t mind. I was shooting an ultra wide angle lens at 16mm (actually 24mm on the crop sensor camera), which isn’t exactly your ideal street photography focal length. I was actually just there to get a skyline shot, then I saw him walking along and decided to snap a photo.

Fave Apartment Building

This is my favourite apartment building in Calgary. A wonderful example of pre-war one architecture that is very hard to come by in this modern city.

A Nice Night in Calgary

I went out and shot some photos with a buddy of mine last night. We walked around 17th Ave shooting random things and then made our way to the top of Ramsay to get some city shots. Not a bad picture and it was a nice night to take it :).

Winter or Summer ?

The weather has gone completely INSANE in Calgary the last few days. I have been waking up to WINTER! Yet it is still 100% summer! I have experienced the most awful weather since moving here haha, but I have yet to snap and pack my bags to head back to the coast. I’m sure that day will come, but it aint today ;). Here are a couple of pictures from yesterdays winter blast.

Calgary Uptown Eastside

I shot this photo of Eastside Calgary last night. The look out where I took this picture is just a few blocks away from my house, so I figured rather than watch Seinfeld or Frasier for the millionth time, I’d go out and have some fun. Right after I had set up my camera and tripod the tallest building in the middle’s alarm started going off, something I had never seen before. There was a bunch of flashing lights going up and down the building inside. I thought you might be able to tell from the picture, but it looks rather normal to me. In any case, I still like the picture and it was cool to see.
