Switching Positions

My 8 year old son Joshua is in his 4th year of playing hockey. Joshua has been talking about wanting to play goalie for the last couple years and has progressively become more and more interested in the position. Over the last couple of months it had become clear to me that my sons heart was set on becoming a goalie. Anytime he has free time to spend on the computer or his iPad he is watching goalie videos on YouTube. I bought him a street hockey goalie set for his net in the basement and he asks me to play with him down there everyday as soon as I walk through the door. My wife and I talked it over and came to the conclusion that there was no question, Joshua wanted to be a goalie.

Joshua plays at the Novice (Mites in the US) level and at this level of hockey the kids just rotate the goalie position. Next year Joshua will be moving up the Atom level and it is there that teams have full-time goalies. So with that in mind we decided to get him his goalie gear early and get him practicing up for next years try outs. Yesterday Joshua had his first chance to try out his new gear in a game and I am happy to report it went great! A lot of good saves went down, but more importantly my son’s dream of becoming a goalie has come true and he’s happy.

Thanks for stopping by, Rob
