Switching Positions

My 8 year old son Joshua is in his 4th year of playing hockey. Joshua has been talking about wanting to play goalie for the last couple years and has progressively become more and more interested in the position. Over the last couple of months it had become clear to me that my sons heart was set on becoming a goalie. Anytime he has free time to spend on the computer or his iPad he is watching goalie videos on YouTube. I bought him a street hockey goalie set for his net in the basement and he asks me to play with him down there everyday as soon as I walk through the door. My wife and I talked it over and came to the conclusion that there was no question, Joshua wanted to be a goalie.

Joshua plays at the Novice (Mites in the US) level and at this level of hockey the kids just rotate the goalie position. Next year Joshua will be moving up the Atom level and it is there that teams have full-time goalies. So with that in mind we decided to get him his goalie gear early and get him practicing up for next years try outs. Yesterday Joshua had his first chance to try out his new gear in a game and I am happy to report it went great! A lot of good saves went down, but more importantly my son’s dream of becoming a goalie has come true and he’s happy.

Well it’s that time of year again that all the hockey fans have been waiting for! The NHL preseason has started the real games are just around the corner. I am sure there are many fun nights in the near future for me in this building.

For the locals, I’m still peeved that Hartley‘s gone, but what are ya gonna do? Hope the Flames have a good year with the new guy.

Flames Win!

Last night the Calgary Flames played their first game of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs and I was down on the Red Mile to take it all in! I won’t give you a run down of the game because it’s late and I need to get to bed (I’m writing this at 12:20am), but all you need to know is the Flames won! When the Flames scored with 30 seconds left in the 3rd period the place I was in exploded! It was an unreal atmosphere and the city was on fire! Hopefully they Flames can keep it roll’n on Fridays game :).

Flames Burning The Canucks

Camera: Canon 6D & 28mm 1.8 ~ Settings: f/14 – 1/125th – ISO 400

If you’re a hockey fan than you probably know the Calgary Flames have made the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs! And if your from Calgary, you know we are playing our arch rivals the Vancouver Canucks in the first round. So to kick things off right around here I had to let it be known how it’s going down. We’ll be burning those bastards up from the first puck drop! 😀

Now about the photo. I had my Canon 6D set up on a tripod and triggered the camera with my Canon RC-1 remote. I had another tripod to camera left with a Canon 580EX ii pointing at me. Since I am originally from Vancouver, I had a jersey collecting dust in my closet. I didn’t actually burn the jersey though, for 2 reasons. One, I’m from Vancouver and still like that jersey haha. And 2, it was really windy and even if I could get the jersey to burn the flames wouldn’t have gone straight up and effect wouldn’t be nearly as dramatic. After I did the initial edit of the photo I photoshopped in the flames burning the jersey.

I expect to take a lot of flack from all my Vancouver friends and family over this picture haha. But I’ve been in Calgary for 3 years now and I started backing up this team the day I got here. As soon as that first hockey season started 3 years ago I was a straight up traitor Calgary Flame. For me it’s all about the home team and this is my home now. GO FLAMES!

Well it’s game day in Calgary and all though I never wear my hat like this, I had to big up the Flames and show that flaming C :). I shot this photo last night while I was shooting some photos in the East Village. Soon to be  home to many of the Calgary Flames players I’m sure. Once they finish building it that is.

Stop and Enjoy the View

Camera: Nikon D300s & 70-210mm F4 at 70mm ~ Settings: f/16 – 1/125th – ISO 200

I was out the other day shooting photos with my Nikon D300s and an old lens that has kind of a so-so reputation. The lens is a circa 1986 – 87 Nikon AF 70-210mm F4. I personally like the lens, but I have a thing for shooting photos with funny old lenses :).

Anyhow, just as I was enjoying the view of the city, this girl stopped near me and decided to do the same while drinking her coffee. That building behind her is called the “Saddledome” and it is where the local NHL Hockey team (The Calgary Flames) plays.

Flames vs Rangers

Last night I went to the hockey game (as I often do). The Calgary Flames were hosting the New York Rangers and this time I decided I’d try to bring a camera along. I didn’t want to bring a proper DSLR with a big white lens that screams “HEY LOOK AT ME! I’M TAKING PICTURES!” lol. So I grabbed my Samsung NX100 Mirrorless with a 18-200mm OIS lens. I got to cap off a few shots during the first period, but then during the 2nd some one that works for the Saddledome (Flames Arena) came and told me I couldn’t take pictures with a camera that had interchangeable lenses. I kind of knew even that camera would be a problem, but figured it was wroth a try :).

Joshua’s Christmas Concert

Last night my 5 year old son Joshua had his school (Stanley Jones Elementary) Christmas Concert. The lighting wasn’t exactly ideal, but the cuteness made up for it! :). Joshua is the taller boy on the right hand side with the Calgary Flames tie on.

Urban HDR

I went out to shoot some photos with a buddy of mine on Saturday and we met at a popular Calgary park/lookout. The plan was to meet at this look out and then go to this old closed down factory to shoot some photos and we did just that. I’d say I got one half decent photo from the factory, but this shot (taken at the end of our outing) I got from our original meeting place was home run for my eyes! ;).

If you have liked my Facebook Page then you might have already seen this picture, but if you haven’t then here it is haha. I shot this one Sunday night down the street from my house. This shot is less about me and more about the bokeh! ;).

Go Flames!

This morning my 2 best buddies and I decided a little trip to the park was in order. The day was completely overcast in the morning and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get a couple of pictures of us together with out having to worry about lighting. Since the NHL season is about to start I thought why not toss the ol Calgary Flames jerseys on for good measure. 🙂
