Ice Cream Night

When I set up for this photo I had no intentions of having any people in the shot. I just wanted to get the sign and the building in the frame. I was all set up and waiting for a bunch of cars to go by so I could capture all the lights. These 3 girls walked up and where waiting for the light to change. I was making some adjustments and snapping a few pictures. The girl with the ice cream asked if I was snapping pictures of them, because they could pose. I laughed and said I was just interested in the sign. However, after l got home and looked at the test shots with the girls, I liked that one better than the one with the car lights. So as it turns out I guess I was taking their picture haha.

PS: That’s my buddy Allen in the bottom left of the photo haha. He was shooting his own photo. Actually I ended up shooting a photo in that exact same spot with that ball of his on the rail. I’ll post that picture next.

Waves

My family and I took a little hike out to a place called Colomitos Beach. The beach is about a 15 minute drive outside of the Puerto Vallarta and then you need to either do a 45 minute hike or take a boat. We did the hike and when we hit the beach the boys were loving it!

PDX Corner

Just the corner of a random street in Portland. These pictures are from quite awhile ago. I was just passing by here one day and snapped the shots without much thought. I came across the pictures on my computer this morning and figured I’d share them. 🙂

Mirror Man

So there I was waiting for an elevator one day when I spotted this mirror. I didn’t give it much thought to be honest, just a quick look and a snap. Sometimes that’s all you need to walk away with something you like. 🙂

Switching Positions

My 8 year old son Joshua is in his 4th year of playing hockey. Joshua has been talking about wanting to play goalie for the last couple years and has progressively become more and more interested in the position. Over the last couple of months it had become clear to me that my sons heart was set on becoming a goalie. Anytime he has free time to spend on the computer or his iPad he is watching goalie videos on YouTube. I bought him a street hockey goalie set for his net in the basement and he asks me to play with him down there everyday as soon as I walk through the door. My wife and I talked it over and came to the conclusion that there was no question, Joshua wanted to be a goalie.

Joshua plays at the Novice (Mites in the US) level and at this level of hockey the kids just rotate the goalie position. Next year Joshua will be moving up the Atom level and it is there that teams have full-time goalies. So with that in mind we decided to get him his goalie gear early and get him practicing up for next years try outs. Yesterday Joshua had his first chance to try out his new gear in a game and I am happy to report it went great! A lot of good saves went down, but more importantly my son’s dream of becoming a goalie has come true and he’s happy.

Camera Man

After everyone in my house went to bed last night I decided to go out and shoot some photos. I had the idea for this picture a while back and I knew if I didn’t shoot it soon it would have to wait until the spring. The weather in Calgary has been pretty warm lately, but last night it dipped down to around 32F (0C). 32 doesn’t seem all THAT cold, but my hands were FREEZING!

Anyhow, about the picture. I shot this photo with my Nikon D800E & Sigma 85mm 1.4 shot wide open. I used one bare flash to camera left shot at 1/128th. I per-focused on the area I was going to stand using a little flashlight sitting on the spot. The flash light kind of worked, but focus wasn’t bang on (close enough though😉). I put my camera on a 10 second timer and jumped into position holding my trusty Nikon D3s in my frozen hand.

Still Skateboarding

A lot of things in life change, somethings don’t. I have been riding around on my skateboard since I was around 8 years old. At times I skated more than others, but it has always been a part of my life and I’m sure it always will be in one way or another.

I shot these photos last night with the help of a friend. I set up the shot with on flash to camera right. I had my friend hit the shutter button for me while I did the skateboarding. 🙂 Thanks Nathan!

The Sprawl Jump

I was out shooting photos on Friday night and ended up at this place. I thought a near by art piece would make a good fisheye shot, but it turned out to be a bust. Since my other photo idea wasn’t working out I noticed this bench and I thought I might try jumping off it. Since I was wearing a t-shirt of my friend Jermey’s company I thought I’d ditch the jacket in the cold and big up his journalism project (The Sprawl). Jeremey is doing great journalism work here in Calgary and if your into the local political scene you’ll defiantly want to check him out.

To shoot this photo I set up my camera on a tripod at its lowest setting and framed the shot. I set up one Godox V860ii flash sitting on my camera bag to camera right. Then I started jumping around like a crazy person! 😉

On The Edge

I was wondering around the city last night looking for some new locations to shoot a photo. I went up a set of stairs between some buildings and ended up here. As soon as I got to the top of the stairs I new I wanted to get out on the ledge. I checked it out and had the vision for the photo in my mind right away. The ledge was on some pretty tight quarters, so I had my tripod spread out just enough to stand on the opposite side ledge and I put one flash on the ledge behind my left foot. I shot this photo with my Nikon 14mm f/2.8 and I don’t think anything less would have been up for the job. The picture turned out exactly like how I had pictured it in my mind and when that happens it’s always a good feeling.

Aurora

So we got some family in town visiting from Edmonton and BC. My sister in-law brought her friend Aurora along. We were all hanging out talking yesterday and I thought I might as well get a picture of Aurora. We just stepped in front of my house and I shot the photos with natural light.

I used two cameras, the fist picture I took with my D800E and my Sigma 85mm 1.4. The 2nd shot I took with my Sony a7R with a old manual focus Nikon 50mm 1.8. I edited both photo quite differently, the first is more of what I always do and the second a little more of a dull/darker style. Anyhow, I like them both and it’s always nice to take pictures of a new face.

The Grim Reaper

My son Joshua had the best halloween costume this year! I thought it would be shame not to share it. 👻

Selfie in the Night

After everyone at my house went to bed I decided I’d get out and shoot a photo. As soon as I got my gear in my car a light snow started to fall! I almost packed it in, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to take the few minutes drive to some buildings and see if I could find a covered area. Lucky for me when I got around some bigger buildings, it wasn’t snowing.

I shot this photo with my camera on a tripod with a 10 second timer. I used one Godox V860ii flash on the ground bare to camera right. It took a few tries to get something I was happy with. This picture was the last shot I took and it was just in time, as the parking lot security had just showed up to see what I was up too haha.
