Camera Man

After everyone in my house went to bed last night I decided to go out and shoot some photos. I had the idea for this picture a while back and I knew if I didn’t shoot it soon it would have to wait until the spring. The weather in Calgary has been pretty warm lately, but last night it dipped down to around 32F (0C). 32 doesn’t seem all THAT cold, but my hands were FREEZING!

Anyhow, about the picture. I shot this photo with my Nikon D800E & Sigma 85mm 1.4 shot wide open. I used one bare flash to camera left shot at 1/128th. I per-focused on the area I was going to stand using a little flashlight sitting on the spot. The flash light kind of worked, but focus wasn’t bang on (close enough though😉). I put my camera on a 10 second timer and jumped into position holding my trusty Nikon D3s in my frozen hand.

Warm Winter Sunset

You can’t really tell from this picture, but it has been a very mild winter so far in Calgary. I’m not sure what the temperature was when I shot this photo, but it was sweater weather for sure. I did kind of a weird edit on this shot, I was going for a grainy film look. I’m not sure if the edit worked out exactly how I was planning, but I kinda like the picture. Anyhow, I think the warm weather is going to be sticking around for a little while longer, so I’ll be getting out there as much as I can before it get’s cold again!

His First Real Camera

I gave my 6 year old son Cameron his first real camera today. He had been asking me for one for the past 6 months and he was very clear he wanted one like mine with a proper viewfinder, so no point and shoots would do. I told him I would be keeping my eye out for a good deal on a camera for him and today was the day. Cameron is now the happy owner of a good old Canon 20D! A camera I have a lot of experience with, as I shot one for a very long time back in the 20D days. He loves the camera and I think it will suit him just fine while he dips his toes into the wonderful world of photography.

When I gave Cameron the camera he was super excited and happy! I quickly showed him the basics and he ran out the door to shoot photos. I caught up with him about 45 minutes later and he was still wondering around the block taking pictures. We passed by this tree and he ask me to hold his camera. He shot up the tree, I gave him is camera back and he started taking pictures of this dog that was sitting in the grass. I’d say he’s got the right idea about getting a unique shot. Who knows, we just might have another photographer in the family. 🙂

1st Day of School

Well my 2 boys are off to school again! (1st grade & 3rd grade). It’s always fun taking the kids to their first day of school. I couldn’t get these guys to stay still for a picture together though! They were too excited to get to their friends. Next year I’ll plan that part a little better haha. Anyhow, it’s exciting times at Stanly Jones Elementary and a good day to reflect on another summers past. 🙂

Heck of a Sunset

I was on my way home from a photo shoot last night and I could see a wicked sunset going down. It was a bit late and I wanted to get home, but I knew I would regret not stopping for one last picture. Am I ever glad I stopped, because it was one heck of sunset indeed! 🙂

A Shot with Joshua

exif-data-rob-moses-canon-eos-6d-70-200mm-f4-isIt’s not often I get to have a picture with my son Joshua. You would think I have tons, but unfortunately I don’t! I have decided that is all going to change and I am going to make more of an effort to get in pictures with my children. They grow so fast and it seems like I barely have any pictures of me with them. Here’s to a good start. 🙂

On The Railing

sony-a850-minolta-100mm-f2-8-macro-rob-moses-exif-dataI was out for a walk around the neighbourhood with my son Joshua yesterday evening. I wanted to shoot a photo with my Minolta 100mm lens and I figured I’d find something to shoot a long the way. When we got to the spot in the picture, my son suggested I just take a picture of him. I’m glad he made the suggestion, because I love how the photo turned out.

Frosty Climb City

exif data Canon 5D mark iii 70-200mm Rob MosesI had to climb a pretty big fence for this shot. I had driven by this location a long time ago and thought I might be able to get a good shot if I was to climb up the fence. I just happen to be driving near that location again today and I thought with all the frost on the trees and the clear sky, it might be worth trying out. I’m glad I made the stop, because I love a picture with buildings mountains together :).

If you check out this link by around 11:30am on Sunday you can watch the Periscope video of me climbing haha. Climbing Periscope Video

Timeless Fun

6d exif data rob moses

I’m sure most of us have done this before as a child and some of us as adults. Not exactly sure why dragging a stick a long a fence is so fun for a child, but it definitely falls into the timeless category in my book. This picture is of my son Cameron when we were walking to the park one day. 🙂

Floating Around in the Fog

Camera: Canon 5D mark iii & 16-35L ii at 35mm ~ Settings: f/2.8 – 1/400th – ISO 2500

It has been rather foggy around Calgary these days. Yesterday I decided to take a picture of myself on the path in front of my house. My original idea was to shoot a photo of me just standing in the path with my camera and I did that. When reviewing the photos on the cameras LCD I thought the photo could use a little extra zip, and the idea to jump popped into my head. I think the levitating look adds a real fun element to the shot.

I used a Canon RC-1 remote on a 2 second timer to trigger my camera which was on a tripod behind me. I shot about a dozen of these, because I had to make sure I jumped right at the perfect time to be in the air when the shutter clicked. I also didn’t want my clothes to look like they were flapping around either. At first I was wearing a hoody on while doing this, but it just didn’t look right. It was only after the fact that I noticed my shirt matched my lens haha. Just good luck there.

As for the second shot, since I was clearly taking up the whole path way I had the opportunity to say hello to a few people from the neighbourhood. I snapped a quick shot of this friendly guy and his dog as they walked by. Nothing like getting in people’s way to spark up a little dialog. 😉

Side Note: If anyone is wondering, in the picture I’m holding a Canon 6D & 70-200mm f/2.8 IS in my hand.

Joshua’s Christmas Concert

Last night my 5 year old son Joshua had his school (Stanley Jones Elementary) Christmas Concert. The lighting wasn’t exactly ideal, but the cuteness made up for it! :). Joshua is the taller boy on the right hand side with the Calgary Flames tie on.

3 Buddies in the City

Yesterday my sons and I caught the train from our neighbourhood to one of the neighbouring areas to mix up our urban routine. Naturally I had my camera with me and shot a few photos through out the afternoon. Our original idea was to check out some candy stores I knew of in the area, however they were both close. In replacement of candy we got rice crispy squares, pumpkin loaf and coffee (only I had the coffee haha). We hang out at a table on the street, enjoyed our snacks and took in the city as it should be taken, with good company and good coffee! ;).
