DIY Deadcat Mic Windscreen

I made a DIY video on how to make a Deadcat style windscreen out of the tail of a stuffed cat (teddy bear) haha. I did a couple tests and it worked really good! If you care about your video’s audio you might like this video. ūüôā

Sony a7ii & Canon 50mm 1.2

I recently got a grip for my Sony a7ii. The grip is an aftermarket brand called Vello. The grip makes holding onto this camera feel way better and I am sure because of it I will reach for this camera more often than I do. The lens I have on the camera is a Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 manual focus lens from the 1970’s.¬†Not only does this combination look awesome, it’s ¬†produces awesome results! I added a photo I shot bellow that I took with this set up right after I took a picture of the camera. Oh and FYI, I shot the photo bellow handheld in the dead of night around 11:30pm!

Old Camera Park

exif data rob moses nikon d2xs 50mm 1.8GEven in the middle of winter, Princes Island Park has people buzzing around. I shot this photo on my way home yesterday evening just as the sun started to set. I shot this photo with Nikon D2Xs & a 50mm 1.8G. Even though the D2Xs is an older camera now, it still performs wonderfully and is a real joy to use. I am no stranger to old cameras, or new ones and I divide my time up between the two types. I never got caught up in the attitude that the latest and greatest in cameras would get me the best pictures. For me, how the camera performs and how my images look at the end is what is important, not the latest or what other people think a good camera is.

A Friends Camera

rob moses exif data canon 6d 70-200mm f4 isI was out shooting the skyline with a friend of mine over the weekend when this idea popped into my head. At first I shot this photo at f4 and slowly made my way to f14. At f4 you couldn’t tell what was in front of the camera, but here in this shot I think it’s a little more clear :).

Hipster Camera on The Hip

exif data rob moses Canon 6d 50mm 1.4

I had the idea for this shot for one reason, to show off the cool looking Canon A-1. I think the A1 looks extra cool with the grip attached to it, so I was thinking of how I could get a good picture with the camera being the main focal point and not just have it sitting there. I love a good skyline picture and I love bokeh, so I thought this little mixture would make a good shot.

Getting this shot was not easy, I was pre-focsuing because I left my RC1 remote at home. So I put a can on ground, pre-focused there, recomposed, put the camera on a 10 second timer and took my spot in the frame. After a dozen or so shots, I finally came up with this one. I actually had a friend with me and he could have easily shot the photo for me, but then it wouldn’t exactly be all mine would it? haha. Plus, the challenge of getting the shot on my own was half the fun :).

My Favourite 3 Cameras

Sony NEX-7 16mm exif data Rob Moses

I had the Sony Fisheye Converter on for the above photo.

Although I have been known to shoot other brands of cameras here and there, Canon is my favourite. These 3 cameras in particular are my current favourites. The Cameras are a Canon 5D Mark iii, 1D Mark iii & a 6D. I know it’s kind of silly to have all 3 of these (not to mention all the other cameras I have), however they all have their uses where for me they shine the best. The 5D Mark iii is good for just about everything and I use it as such. The 1D Mark iii is great for sports when you need that quick frame per second (10 fps) and the 6D is nice to just walk around with and share photos quickly via the cameras wifi. They are all great cameras and if I had to choose just one it would be a very difficult choice.

The Look

I was downtown not to long ago and I saw this guy shooting some video of a sign. I walked over and took a picture of him, then he noticed I was beside him pointing a camera at him and when he looked at me he had this hilarious look on his face! LOL. It made me laugh, I said a quick “Hi” and kept walking haha.

Canon A-1

I was bored the other night so I decided to do a little product style photography. This old A-1 is sitting on my desk in my office/basement studio, so I just grabbed it and took this picture. For lighting I had 2 Canon 550EX Speedlites shot through umbrellas and one LED light pointing at the lens for the catchlight.

I shot a photo of the Calgary skyline this summer from the East Village. While I was there I took my phone out shoot a¬†Instagram picture. While taking that picture if thought a picture of my phone taking that picture might be cool haha. I’m a big fan of the BOKEH!, so I rather like this one :). The phone in the picture is a HTC One and the camera in the phone is a Canon 7D.

The picture on the right is the Instagram picture I took with my phone.

I picked up a new lens recently that I had been thinking about getting for quite sometime. I was torn between the Canon 28mm f/1.8 & the Sigma version. I decided to go with the Canon version because of the size and weight (smaller & lighter). The lens performs decent wide open as you can see from the shot of my son bellow, however if you are pixel peeping on some printed letters at 1.8 you might not be all that impressed. With that said, real world use in regular type pictures are all good wide open.

On a side note, the lens came with the filter on it and I am kind of moving away from them at the moment. I was going to just take it off, but thought I might leave it on for a bit and see how I feel. The extra protection is nice, but I think it looks kind of ridiculous with the filter on it haha. I will do a full post on this subject in the future.

JUMP!

3 off camera flash set up HTC one Canon 550ex 580ex ii 5Dii 5D mark ii 2 - Rob Moses Photography

Today felt like a good day to shoot a little off camera flash. My son was outside playing with some of his friends so I decided to get them to do some jumps for me :). I set up 3 flashes, one 580EX ii as my main, a 550EX on the side and another 550EX from a little bellow. I grabbed a quick picture of the set up with my phone before the jumping started.

I was shooting from where the backpack on the grass is. I triggered my flashes with a set of 4 Yongnuo 622C E-TTL wireless flash triggers
