In Camera City View

I shot this photo on Friday night from Rotary Park in Calgary. The camera in the picture is my Mamiya 645 1000s with a 80mm f/1.9. I had the camera set up on a tripod and had another tripod set up higher over the pictured camera. I shot this photo with a Sony A7R with a Nikon 55mm f/2.8 Micro manual focus lens. After my first test shot I knew I was going to need some external light, because the street light that was on in the park was super orange and the grass was a very ugly version of a pumpkin orange. Since I didn’t bring any lighting I just whipped out my trusty iPhone and used the flashlight on there to paint the scene while the 30 exposure was on. I think it all worked out pretty good!

Fujifilm X-E1 & Canon 50mm 1.2

I picked up this Fujifilm X-E1 on consignment the other day when I was down at my local camera shop. The body was there for $250, so I thought why not. At that price you can’t really go wrong. The screen has some scratches on it, but that kind of thing doesn’t bother me. I got my vintage Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 on the camera and have been testing it out for the past week. Everyday I learn something new about the camera and I think I am close to figuring out the settings so the jpegs come out the way I like. FYI, I have been shooting raw since forever, but the Fuji JPEGs are supposed to be what’s up so I’m moseying down that road right now.

The pictures bellow (except for the camera shot) are just some random shots I took with the camera. All the photos are straight out of the camera with no edits applied to the pictures. From one picture to the next I had wished I made a little adjustment here or there, but I am getting closer to what I want as the days go on. I am sure by this time next week I’ll have that thing dialled in perfect, well perfect for me at least haha.

Fujifilm JPEG in Portland

I have been hearing about how amazing the Fujifilm jpegs are for sometime now. I decided it might be time to give Fuji a closer look and see if the photos lived up to the hype. I had been planning on heading back down to Portland to hang out for a few days and I thought why not take a Fujifilm X-T2 with me to see how it handles. First off, the camera was a joy to use and the 16-55mm f/2.8 and 56mm f/1.2 I was using were amazing! Both lenses were super sharp and created and pleasing bokeh. Anyhow, I am not doing a full review on any of the gear, but I will be posting some pictures over the next couple weeks that I took with the Fuji setup. I will only be posting straight out of camera jpegs, because the cameras filters and in camera edit style settings is what has really attracted me to the camera itself. So here’s the first one of many to come. I don’t think this is the best shot I got with the camera, but it’s one I like :).

Sony a7ii & Canon 50mm 1.2

I recently got a grip for my Sony a7ii. The grip is an aftermarket brand called Vello. The grip makes holding onto this camera feel way better and I am sure because of it I will reach for this camera more often than I do. The lens I have on the camera is a Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 manual focus lens from the 1970’s. Not only does this combination look awesome, it’s  produces awesome results! I added a photo I shot bellow that I took with this set up right after I took a picture of the camera. Oh and FYI, I shot the photo bellow handheld in the dead of night around 11:30pm!

Old Camera Park

exif data rob moses nikon d2xs 50mm 1.8GEven in the middle of winter, Princes Island Park has people buzzing around. I shot this photo on my way home yesterday evening just as the sun started to set. I shot this photo with Nikon D2Xs & a 50mm 1.8G. Even though the D2Xs is an older camera now, it still performs wonderfully and is a real joy to use. I am no stranger to old cameras, or new ones and I divide my time up between the two types. I never got caught up in the attitude that the latest and greatest in cameras would get me the best pictures. For me, how the camera performs and how my images look at the end is what is important, not the latest or what other people think a good camera is.

A Friends Camera

rob moses exif data canon 6d 70-200mm f4 isI was out shooting the skyline with a friend of mine over the weekend when this idea popped into my head. At first I shot this photo at f4 and slowly made my way to f14. At f4 you couldn’t tell what was in front of the camera, but here in this shot I think it’s a little more clear :).

Hipster Camera on The Hip

exif data rob moses Canon 6d 50mm 1.4

I had the idea for this shot for one reason, to show off the cool looking Canon A-1. I think the A1 looks extra cool with the grip attached to it, so I was thinking of how I could get a good picture with the camera being the main focal point and not just have it sitting there. I love a good skyline picture and I love bokeh, so I thought this little mixture would make a good shot.

Getting this shot was not easy, I was pre-focsuing because I left my RC1 remote at home. So I put a can on ground, pre-focused there, recomposed, put the camera on a 10 second timer and took my spot in the frame. After a dozen or so shots, I finally came up with this one. I actually had a friend with me and he could have easily shot the photo for me, but then it wouldn’t exactly be all mine would it? haha. Plus, the challenge of getting the shot on my own was half the fun :).

Commuting Calgary – Canon FD

Exif data Sony a7ii & Canon FD 80-200mm f4 SSC rob moses

I shot this photo at f/16.

I have been on a bit of vintage lens kick lately. I recently got my hands on a Canon FD 80-200mm f4 SSC. This is the first test shot I took with the lens on my Sony a7ii. The combination of these old Canon lenses on the a7ii is awesome and super fun to use. This particular lens can be found for pretty cheap (around $100. US dollars). For anyone with an a7 body and no 70-200, it’s kind of a no brainer to pick one of these up. The image quality is good and it is a joy to use. It’s also go this cool built in lens hood! Love the build quality of these classic lenses.

My Favourite 3 Cameras

Sony NEX-7 16mm exif data Rob Moses

I had the Sony Fisheye Converter on for the above photo.

Although I have been known to shoot other brands of cameras here and there, Canon is my favourite. These 3 cameras in particular are my current favourites. The Cameras are a Canon 5D Mark iii, 1D Mark iii & a 6D. I know it’s kind of silly to have all 3 of these (not to mention all the other cameras I have), however they all have their uses where for me they shine the best. The 5D Mark iii is good for just about everything and I use it as such. The 1D Mark iii is great for sports when you need that quick frame per second (10 fps) and the 6D is nice to just walk around with and share photos quickly via the cameras wifi. They are all great cameras and if I had to choose just one it would be a very difficult choice.

Lensbaby Sweet 35

Camera: Canon 5D mark iii & 16-35L ii @ 35mm ~ Settings: f/5.6 – 1/5 – ISO 400

Canon 5D mark iii & Lensbaby Sweet 35

This is one crazy lens! I had been aware of Lensbaby for a long time now, but I never had the opportunity to use one. Then one day last week, I walked into a random thrift store and I saw this lens sitting in a glass case. I ask to check it out to see if the lens was in good working order. I put the Lensbaby on my 5D mark iii and it worked like a dream. The price tag said $75, but since it was thrift store I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask if they could cut me a little slack on the price, lucky for me they were cool with that and I got the lens for a measly $50! (retail price $380 US dollars). Score one for the R-O-B! haha ;).

These are just a couple of test shots I have taken with the lens so far. The lens is full manual focus and it kind of spins around on a little ball head similar to a tripod head. The bokeh is pretty wicked on it, but getting your focus on point can be a challenge (just as with any manual focus lens). I’ll let this lens bounce around in my bag for the next few months and see if I can get any cool pictures with it. We’ll see if Lensbaby can earn a permanent spot in my collection.

Nikon 50mm 1.8 vs 1.4 Video

I made this video yesterday that gives my thoughts on the Nikon 50mm 1.8D vs 1.4D. The test shots were very un-scientific. All pictures were taken hand-held, one after the other and the lighting in the room did not change.

This video was shot with a Canon T3i & 28mm 1.8 and a 5D mark iii & 16-35L. Sound was recorded with Rode Videomic Pro & a Blue Yeti Microphone.

The following pictures are the shots used in the video in the order they appear.

Old Camera & Older Lens

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter than you might already know I got my hands on an old Nikon D70 with a Sigma 10-20mm lens for $75! I have been playing around with it lately just for fun and have gotten some good pictures with it. I put my old 1970’s 50mm 1.4 lens on it have found the combination really fun. For whatever reason, I find it really fun to try and get good pictures with this combination of a 10 year old DSLR & 40 year old lens haha. The way I see it, anything that gets me out the door taking pictures has got to be a good thing.

Bellow the camera shot is just a random picture of Calgary I took with this set up yesterday :).
