Enjoy The Sunset

exif-data-canon-5d-classic-ef-85mm-1-8I was out one day for a walk the park and was enjoying the sunset. I walked up on this couple who were taking it all in with a front row seat. That feather in the guys cap caught my eye and I thought putting the sun right between them would be perfect. I like how the sun looks in the picture and I love how it looked in person.

Snowy Landscape

Anytime I get out in the mountains for some photos it’s a good time. This day was particularly beautiful. The right combination of bright light and clean snow makes for a good landscape view.

Ice Skating Time Lapse

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2015 was good to you and 2016 is even better 😀.

Yesterday evening I went down to the ice skating rink at Olympic Plaza here in Calgary. I set up my GoPro Hero 4 Silver on a Joby Gorillapod Focus onto a fence that was guarding some lights the city had set up. Once I framed up my shot and let the shutter go I thought I might shoot some photos, however it was colder than I had anticipated and ended up keeping my hands in my pockets 😅. Unfortunately I had also forgot my phone in my car, so I couldn’t even do a Periscope or do some Instagraming! However, all that was probably for the best anyhow, because the fence I set up camera up on was a temporary fence and prone to shaking easy if anyone decided to lean on it or anything. So there I stood, keeping guard as if the fence was surrounding some precious treasure haha. I can tell you with certainty that this part of the evening was not fun. Standing around in a 6 foot area by yourself in the freezing cold (trying not look like a weirdo) with no phone or anyone to talk to for over an hour is not a good time. With that said, I am still happy I went down there because I think the time lapse turned out kind of cool. 🙂

Joshua’s 1st Saints Game

rob moses exif data Canon 50D 70-200mm 2.8 isMy son Joshua (#18) is playing “Timbits” hockey this year. The team he plays for is called the Saints and they had their first real game on Saturday. Joshua had a really great game and scored 7 goals for his team! What a guy, I couldn’t have been more proud of him :). I didn’t get a shot of the crowed, as they were up and behind me and I only brought my 70-200mm. I can tell you for sure though, the crowd was fired up and really into the game. It was a super fun atmosphere.

Usually I shoot hockey pictures with my 5D mark iii, but this time I decided to bring a crop sensor camera (Canon 50D) for the extra reach. I had never been to this area before and I wasn’t sure where I was going be shooting from, so I figured I’d better have that extra reach incase I was going to be far off. The 50D’s auto focus isn’t exactly renowned and the same could be said for the high ISO capabilities. The pictures turned out ok, but the noise turned out to be more of an issue than I had anticipated. Ah well, live and learn! I’ll be shooting the next game with the 5D for sure.

Joshua The Hockey Player

My 5 year old son Joshua has started playing organized hockey this year. The program he has joined is called Grassroots Hockey and it is a mellow introduction to organized hockey. The kids play outdoors and the focus seems to be more on having fun, rather than taking the game to serious. This was Joshua’s 2nd game and he got him self a nice little hat trick (3 goals) for the 2nd game in a row. They don’t have proper goalies or anything, so scoring isn’t exactly the hardest thing to do in this league haha ;). It’s really fun and super cute watching these little guys bumping around the rink.

Ice Skating in The City

Camera: Canon 6D & 17-40L @ 17mm ~ Settings: f/4 – 1/10th – ISO 2500

Last week I went down to the Olympic Plaza ice skating rink downtown here in Calgary. It was a little chilly out and my hands got rather cold while I was shooting these photos. I had gloves with me, but I they weren’t really doing the trick. For the first picture I had to stand there with my hand over the shutter button waiting for the right gust of wind so I could capture the flags blowing. Of course this plan of action didn’t exactly help my cold hand situation haha. I didn’t get the flag exactly how I wanted, but it was close enough for the weather conditions. 😉

Flames vs Rangers

Last night I went to the hockey game (as I often do). The Calgary Flames were hosting the New York Rangers and this time I decided I’d try to bring a camera along. I didn’t want to bring a proper DSLR with a big white lens that screams “HEY LOOK AT ME! I’M TAKING PICTURES!” lol. So I grabbed my Samsung NX100 Mirrorless with a 18-200mm OIS lens. I got to cap off a few shots during the first period, but then during the 2nd some one that works for the Saddledome (Flames Arena) came and told me I couldn’t take pictures with a camera that had interchangeable lenses. I kind of knew even that camera would be a problem, but figured it was wroth a try :).

Ice Skating Downtown

This is the Olympic Plaza ice skating rink downtown in Calgary. I took this around 1pm on Monday and as you can see there wasn’t a lot of people there. This might be an ideal time to do some skating if you’re looking to avoid crowds :). It’s a nice setting right downtown and the subway stops pretty much right across the street. I might have to make my way down there with my skates one of these days.

Yesterday morning I posted this picture to Instagram & Twitter. Not long after I posted the picture on Twitter I was contacted by @craig_larkins, a local CBC News Weather Man about the picture. He basically said he liked the picture and he was going to share it on the news during his weather cast that night! I shared the news clip on my Instagram account after it had aired and have posted it here too. Fun stuff! 🙂

Old Country Bridge

I was out shooting a house in a small town called Cochrane yesterday. The town is about 20 minutes outside of the city and is a nice little community from what I saw. I had shot houses in this community before and I always noticed this old bridge from the top of a large hill as your driving in.  For no apparent reasons, I felt today was the day I would get a picture of this bridge. When I found the bridge, I of course drove over it just to drive over it haha, but the funny thing about this bridge is it really leads to no where. On the other side of the river is a privet road and what looks to be a farm. Pretty nice bridge for a couple of luck people I’d say :).

Nice & Frozen Calgary

I went out last night around 6:30pm to take this picture. Little did I know just how cold it was. Once I set up my tripod, I whipped out my phone to check the temperature because I was already freezing. It was a bone chilling – 8 F! (-22C). I was only able to get 8 shots off before my toes were so cold they started to hurt! I took this as my que to head home (thankfully I live like 3 or 4 minutes from this location). Funny thing about this little outing is this picture was the very first one I took haha.

On a little side note, I took this picture with my newly acquired Pentax K-5. I had the 50mm lens from an old film camera. I have always liked Pentax and thought I’d give one of their DSLR’s a try. Don’t take this the wrong way, I love Canon and most likely will always be a Canon shooter, but it’s fun to mix things up a little here and there ;).
