Aurora

So we got some family in town visiting from Edmonton and BC. My sister in-law brought her friend Aurora along. We were all hanging out talking yesterday and I thought I might as well get a picture of Aurora. We just stepped in front of my house and I shot the photos with natural light.

I used two cameras, the fist picture I took with my D800E and my Sigma 85mm 1.4. The 2nd shot I took with my Sony a7R with a old manual focus Nikon 50mm 1.8. I edited both photo quite differently, the first is more of what I always do and the second a little more of a dull/darker style. Anyhow, I like them both and it’s always nice to take pictures of a new face.

The Grim Reaper

My son Joshua had the best halloween costume this year! I thought it would be shame not to share it. 👻

It’s Winter

Well winter has swung into Calgary chopping heads and frostbiting fingers! It feels like we went from 0 to 100 miles an hour of winter action in no time. You look at this photo and it looks like it could have been taken in January, but I shot this yesterday morning! Oh well, that’s life in Calgary. Winter is here and it’s here to stay!

Drizzling River

You can’t tell from this picture, but there was light drizzle of rain coming down when I shot this photo. As you can tell from the sky it was quite overcast that night, which wasn’t a bad thing because it reflected the light well. On these dark cold nights I’ll take any light I can get!

Autumn in Calgary

I shot this photo a few weeks ago and wasn’t going to share it because I thought it would make a better night shot. Then I figured there is no reason to not share both. I took this picture from the parking garage of a local college (SAIT). I was looking for portrait locations and while I was looking around I just snapped this photo for the heck of it. It aint bad, maybe a little heavy on the parking lot though.

Selfie in the Night

After everyone at my house went to bed I decided I’d get out and shoot a photo. As soon as I got my gear in my car a light snow started to fall! I almost packed it in, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to take the few minutes drive to some buildings and see if I could find a covered area. Lucky for me when I got around some bigger buildings, it wasn’t snowing.

I shot this photo with my camera on a tripod with a 10 second timer. I used one Godox V860ii flash on the ground bare to camera right. It took a few tries to get something I was happy with. This picture was the last shot I took and it was just in time, as the parking lot security had just showed up to see what I was up too haha.

Through The Trees

It’s a pretty good view through the trees right here! You can’t see the river because of the trees, but I’d rather stare at buildings anyhow. 😉

Selfie On a Ledge

I was out taking pictures on the weekend and I was setting up for a shot of the city. While I was deciding where to shoot from I noticed this little ledge off the balcony I was standing on. The ledge looked easy enough to get onto so I thought I might as well hop onto it and do a self portrait. At first I was just looking at the camera normal. I had my D800E set to shoot 3 photos and on the 3rd one I just decided to pull my hood up and look at the camera. This is not how I normally am in front of the camera, but it’s good do do something different from time to time. 🙂

His First Real Camera

I gave my 6 year old son Cameron his first real camera today. He had been asking me for one for the past 6 months and he was very clear he wanted one like mine with a proper viewfinder, so no point and shoots would do. I told him I would be keeping my eye out for a good deal on a camera for him and today was the day. Cameron is now the happy owner of a good old Canon 20D! A camera I have a lot of experience with, as I shot one for a very long time back in the 20D days. He loves the camera and I think it will suit him just fine while he dips his toes into the wonderful world of photography.

When I gave Cameron the camera he was super excited and happy! I quickly showed him the basics and he ran out the door to shoot photos. I caught up with him about 45 minutes later and he was still wondering around the block taking pictures. We passed by this tree and he ask me to hold his camera. He shot up the tree, I gave him is camera back and he started taking pictures of this dog that was sitting in the grass. I’d say he’s got the right idea about getting a unique shot. Who knows, we just might have another photographer in the family. 🙂

Out in These Streets

I was out kicking around Calgary last night shooting some photos. It wasn’t a particularly nice night for it, because the sky was rather dark, but there were people out and the atmosphere of the city made up for the dark skies. I met 4 different people and we all followed each other on Instagram. The first picture is one of those people. Big up to everyone down to meet someone new on the city streets at night. 🙂

1st Day of School

Well my 2 boys are off to school again! (1st grade & 3rd grade). It’s always fun taking the kids to their first day of school. I couldn’t get these guys to stay still for a picture together though! They were too excited to get to their friends. Next year I’ll plan that part a little better haha. Anyhow, it’s exciting times at Stanly Jones Elementary and a good day to reflect on another summers past. 🙂
