Just Weeks before with Amy & Dwight

I went kicking around Princes Island Park with Amy & Dwight the other day to shoot some engagement photos. Funny thing about this photo session is it was only a few weeks away from the actual wedding! Not exactly typical, but who cares ;). We really lucked out with the weather because the days leading up to the shoot were really ugly out and then on the day the sun was shinning and it was sweater weather. Good weather, good people and a good location is a recipe for fun and that’s what happened.

I also shot a bit of video along the way too and have added it here if your into that sort of thing.

Early Winter

Winter has hit a little early in Calgary this year! I decided to head out and take a look around the city last night and see how it looked. It was pretty foggy out and I think the fog really added something nice to the picture. It looks quiet to me, and it was. I guess everyone was inside trying to stay warm. 😉

Secluded Peace

exif-data-rob-moses-photography-canon-5d-mark-iii-300mm-f2-8-lTaking pictures of a city a night has a special kind of magic to it. I find this especially true when you are in a dark and secluded place like I was for this shot. My location was completely quiet and I was very much alone. Peaceful, relaxing and exciting all at the same time. I love it. 🙂

Rings of Fire

canon 50d tamron 17-50mm vc rob moses exif dataLast night my friend Nathan and I took the Skipping Stone Bridge in Calgary with a chain and some steel wool. Nathan had wanted to shoot some of these type of photos for about a year and we finally decided to get out and do it. We would both set up our cameras and get our setting and composition the way we wanted, then Nathan would get in position, light the thing on fire and let er rip! On the first attempt the baking whisk that was holding the steel wool flew off the chain almost immediately and flew over the side of the bridge! haha. Luckily the whisk landed on the shore and not into the river. After a quick retrieval mission, the fun times were back on. 🙂

Island Among Towers

Here is a shot of the Calgary skyline with a nice view of Princes Island up front. Princes Island is a wonderful city park, with lots of trees, trails, bridges and plenty of open spaces to enjoy a picnic or just hang out with a bit of nature in the city. The modern Calgary skyline is a nice backdrop to such a great park. As you can imagine, this park is a great location for taking pictures.

I took this picture with a DJi Phantom 3 Professional flying camera ;).

Urban Geese

This is a photo from this past summer. I was making my way over the Centre Street Bridge to get some bridge shots. As I was getting a little closer to the water I noticed these two geese hanging out by the river. I slowly made my way over to them and tried not to make any sudden movements, as to not scare them off. To my surprise I got rather close and they didn’t seem to mind. Now getting a picture of them sharp was not easy. Clearly shooting a night photo like this I needed to shoot a long exposure, however the longer you leave the shutter open, the more chance of the geese moving and thus creating a blurry bird. I wanted to leave the shutter open just enough to show the movement in the water, but keep the birds sharp. To achieve this, I shot with a higher ISO so I could keep the exposure time down, however the geese would have to stay completely still while my shutter was open. Thankfully they felt like standing still for a moment and I just happened to take my picture then :).

Under the Centre Street Bridge

Sometimes you gotta climb around to the kind of picture you want. Like this one for instance, the tide was low on the river so I decided to climb under the bridge as far over as I could go with out getting wet. I shot a lot of photos this night and this was the very last one I took. I knew when I took this picture it was the only one I needed :).

Under the Moonlight

I shot this one a few weeks ago and keep meaning to post it. I love this bridge in the day and love it even more in the night. If you don’t know, it’s the Peace Bridge here in Calgary, Canada. If you have never been here, you haven’t been to the future ;).

The Bow River City

Last night a friend of mine (his blog here) and I went to shoot this photo and we knew a head of time wading through part of the Bow River was going to be part of the plan. On Tuesday evening my son and I had gone to a spot right by here to shoot some photos that didn’t turn out exactly how I had hoped. While we were there I noticed a tiny island of rocks that would be a perfect location for this photo. So I told my friend Nathan about it and I we packed some sandals for walking through river and headed back to the spot. With pants rolled up and gear in hand we crossed the shallow part of the river to the tiny island and let the sun go down just enough for this shot. The river was cold and it was windy, but the picture turned out exactly how I had imagined, so it was worth the effort :).

Running with a View

I was out getting some shots of the Calgary skyline yesterday and while I was there I shot a couple pictures of some girls running. This path they were running on is a great place to run because of the beautiful view of the city. I personally don’t run, but this view is almost enuf to make me take it up! haha.

Anyhow, about these pictures. The first one I shot with a Canon 5D mark iii and 50mm 1.4. The focus was a bit off (I shot at f/1.4) and it took a lot of lightroom/photoshop to bring it back from the dead, but I like the picture so I’d say it was worth it. Funny thing about this picture is I had a 2nd chance at a shot of this girl as she came by me again coming the other direction, however on my 2nd go I started shooting to early and the auto focus hit the buildings behind her, WHOOPS! As for the 2nd picture, I took that one with my HTC One phone and did the edit with the Snapseed app.
