Snowy Landscape

Anytime I get out in the mountains for some photos it’s a good time. This day was particularly beautiful. The right combination of bright light and clean snow makes for a good landscape view.

Lake Louise

exif data rob moses canon 6d 24-105mm ISMy family and I took a trip out to Lake Louise this past weekend. The weather was a little spotty and strange. One moment it would be raining, the next sunny and next again sun and rain! It never started pouring really hard, so that was nice. I spotted this canoe with a large Canadian flag on it and shot this photo. I wish the flag was a little more straight, but I guess like this it shows a little more realism. Anyhow, I thought the canoe and flag made for a nice foreground to the beautiful landscape in the back.

The Instagram picture is of my son shooting a photo on this hike we did. I took that picture with my iPhone and I really like how it turned out. Pretty easy to get a good shot out there I guess :).

Selfie with a Wild Elk!

exif data rob moses a7ii 24-70mmWhile I was in Banff last weekend I saw this massive wild elk just walking down the street! I quickly pulled over, jumped out of my car and ran over with my camera. A small crown quickly gathered, everyone with their cameras and phones out. These girls were right beside me and started taking selfies, so I grabbed a couple pictures of them haha. I showed them the picture after and they laughed. I’m not sure how their selfies turned out, but this one was a keeper!

Oh Deer Vernon

Camera: Canon 6D & 70-200mm f4 IS at 200mm ~ Settings: f/4 – 1/500th – ISO 320

Yesterday I hopped on a little plane and flew out to Vernon, BC Canada. My parents in-law live in Vernon and I met up with my wife and kids who were already here. No longer then 30 minutes after arriving at the house my son told me to come take a look out in the back yard. To my wonderful surprise I saw this beautiful creature standing at the bird feeder having a nice little snack from him self haha. I quickly snapped a picture with my phone (insurance) and then bolted for the guest bedroom for my camera. I swapped the lens and went burnning back! Thankfully I was able to cap this shot off before he decided it was time to bounce :).

Urban Geese

This is a photo from this past summer. I was making my way over the Centre Street Bridge to get some bridge shots. As I was getting a little closer to the water I noticed these two geese hanging out by the river. I slowly made my way over to them and tried not to make any sudden movements, as to not scare them off. To my surprise I got rather close and they didn’t seem to mind. Now getting a picture of them sharp was not easy. Clearly shooting a night photo like this I needed to shoot a long exposure, however the longer you leave the shutter open, the more chance of the geese moving and thus creating a blurry bird. I wanted to leave the shutter open just enough to show the movement in the water, but keep the birds sharp. To achieve this, I shot with a higher ISO so I could keep the exposure time down, however the geese would have to stay completely still while my shutter was open. Thankfully they felt like standing still for a moment and I just happened to take my picture then :).

Alberta Canada Landscape

Yesterday my friend Dusty and I took a little trip south of the city into the Alberta countryside to shoot some landscape photography. We came to the end of one road and saw a few vehicles parked and one of them was occupied. We went and talked to the guy in his truck and asked him if there was a trail that would lead us to a river we knew to be close by (via google maps). He informed us of a trial that would lead us there about 30 minuets into the woods, however the trail was rather wet and marshy. He showed us his muddy pants and said our sneakers probably wouldn’t do. However, we decided we might give it a go anyhow. As we started pulling out our camera gear he asked us if we had any bear mace, of course we did not. He then told us that the bears are what he was looking for and that there was a massive grizzly the area. He then showed us huge paw print he saw and took a picture with on his phone. So with this new valuable knowledge and the ringing of gun shots in the forest we decided we might be a little ill prepared for such a journey haha. So instead we drove about a minute up the road, pulled over and I shot this photo :).

Drunk Girl Shakes Up My Pic

Last night I decided to go out and get some night shots of this bridge that is near my house. As I arrived I noticed a few sketchy looking people milling about, but they ended up going on their way, so I set up my tripod and camera. I set my camera to a 30 second exposure and half way through that first frame some drunk girl and her friend came walking by. The drunk girl then mumbles something about taking a picture and proceeds to grab my tripod and camera and started shaking it around! I grabbed my camera and politely asked her to let go of it as she was ruining my picture! She continued to mumble and shake my camera and finally let go and pushed it away and said “Fine!” and then she walked off to be greeted by anther drunk friend of hers on the bridge LOL. At first I was a little upset that she had ruined my picture, then I looked at what the camera got and I was pleasantly surprised that her insanity had actually made my picture arguably better! haha. I re-took the shot after they had gone on their way and it is bellow the shaken up photo, I actually do like the first one better :).

Now if all that wasn’t enough, it didn’t end there. I decided to walk down a path by the river to get some other shots. As I was walking on this particularly dark part of the path I noticed the worlds biggest beaver waddling around the path a mere 8 feet in front of me! I stopped immediately and turned around. At first I thought it might be a skunk, then I thought, “No that is way to big to be a skunk”. Then being the great outdoorsman that I am (I’m a terrible outdoorsman) I thought it might be a small bear cub! LOL. Ya a bear cub just walking down city path haha. After looking around for the “cubs” mother I quickly realized that was ridiculous. Anyhow, I waited about 5 minutes till he went down the side of the path a bit then went on my way haha. I would have got a picture of the beaver, but unfortunately I didn’t have a flash with me. Thankfully that was all the craziness I endured last night.

Friendly Squirrels

There are some baby squirrels that live a tree in front of our house and they are super friendly. The other day we noticed our neighbour feeding the babies by hand, so my son Joshua went to go check it out. Amazingly the squirrels were extremely friendly and had no problem eating right out of his hand. Pretty cool :).

Run For It!

As you may know from my last post I was out on a little country drive on Friday. While I was driving I noticed a group of Elk & Deers on the side of the road up a hill, however they were to far to get a good picture, since the longest focal length lens I had on me was a Canon 70-300mm DO IS. Then about 50 yards down the road on the other side I noticed another group of Elk/Deer grazing a lot closer and to top it off there was a place for me to pull over! I quickly pulled in and grabbed my camera which was sitting on the seat next to me, jumped out and started shooting. I started whistling at them in the hopes to get a little action out of them. One of the deer didn’t like the whistling much at all and started running for it! The next thing I knew they were all bouncing across the field toward the fence, and once they got there they just started leaping over it like it was nothing! Amazing, to say the least. I grabbed a few more shots as they ran up the hill to joint their pals and then I hopped back in my car and drove back to the city. Sometimes living in Canada aint all that bad ;).

When A Bird Hits Your Window

Like I said last week, I’m mot much of a bird photographer. However when a bird comes flying into your living room window full speed ahead, you get your bird photographer hat on in a hurry! As was the case of this little guy. I was just changing the lens on my camera to go shoot another photo in my basement, when I heard a loud thud on my window. My first thought was maybe some kids accidentally hit my window with a ball or something. When I looked out I saw this little bird laying on  my deck.

At first I just went out to see if he was ok, he kind of hopped up and moved over a little. The bird then sat there with his mouth open, opening and closing his eyes. The scene made me think of the Family Guy clip when Peter fell and hurt his knee haha. Since I  had my camera ready to go I went and grabbed it and shot a few photos. He stayed on my deck for over 5 minutes (I even had time to change lenses), then he started hopping away. I followed him to see if he was going to be able to fly away. The bird eventually hopped across the street and into some bushes where he just sat there, I decided I’d better just leave him alone at that point and let him rest and gather him self. I’ll go check on him later to see if he made it out of there. I hope so!

UPDATE: I went back to check if he made it out of the little spot he had in the bush and he was no where to be seen, so I am assuming he rested, gathered himself and got back to flying into other peoples windows 😉
