Out in These Streets

I was out kicking around Calgary last night shooting some photos. It wasn’t a particularly nice night for it, because the sky was rather dark, but there were people out and the atmosphere of the city made up for the dark skies. I met 4 different people and we all followed each other on Instagram. The first picture is one of those people. Big up to everyone down to meet someone new on the city streets at night. 🙂

Colorful Alley

Just a random shot of a colorful alley in Sandpoint, Idaho. I was just walking around this little town one day when I was passing through and thought the alley looked pretty cool. It’s probably a little bright for your typical alley shot, but I thought it worked because of all the color.

Just got a couple of people having their picture taken twice! I doubt they will ever see this one though ;). I shot this one in manual focus with my Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 at 1.2. I love that lens! The 2nd photo isn’t as cool, but I thought it was still worth sharing.

Just barely caught these two walking by. I wanted to get the front of them, but I could get my settings were I needed them to be in time. I shot this with my awesome 1970’s Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 wide open. I took 2 shots, the first one was a little out of focus and this one hit pretty close :). The 2nd shot is just a random picture from the same set up and same night.

Walk of Art

exif data rob moses canon 5d mark iii 135mmI was out for a little street photography action last night in Calgary. I was walking by a train station and noticed this beautiful painting on the security gate of a store. I thought it would look cool to have some one walking out in front of it, so I waited for the right person and came away with this shot. I don’t usually like placing people dead center in my photos, but for whatever reason I think it works for this shot.

Feiyu G4 Gimbal Stick vs Handheld Video

Yesterday I shot a quick video comparison of me walking with a Feiyu Tech G4 Gimbal Stick vs Handheld video shooting. I shot the video with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver. I’d say the results were pretty straight forward, but let me know what you think.

When I shot this photo I had posted my self up at the turning point of this path. This way I could see who was coming up the stairs and decide if I wanted to take their picture or not. I saw thing guy walking up and waited for him to look directly at me before I took the picture. It’s fun to get the people looking right at you from time to time when shooting in the street :).

The woman in the second picture actually stopped and talked to me for a moment and I was happy to meet her and her little Westie! Those little doggies just happen to be my favourite kind.

Engagement in Hazy YYC: Caroline & Danny

All Photos shot with a Canon 5D mark iii & 50mm 1.4 & 28mm 1.8

I did an Engagement shoot on Tuesday with this fun couple, Caroline & Danny. We met at nice look out spot of the city, unfortunately it was a rather hazy day in Calgary. I wasn’t to worried about the haze thought, since the pictures are about them and not the city ;). It was also cold! We powered throughout the cold weather and walked down to the Centre Street Bridge and shot a few photos there. After the bridge we decided heading to an indoor spot might be a better idea and that is where we spent the rest of our time.

At our indoor location the lighting was just awful! 2 different harsh colours of light, one a crazy yellowy / orange and the other that kind of bluey / white colour (like hospital lighting). For the indoor shots I used one Canon 580EX ii shot into a white bounce umbrella. The flash did a pretty good job of sorting out the crazy colour cast on Caroline & Danny, however the background was still mess and I had to fiddle around with the white balance and colour corrector tools quite a bit in the post. Even though the lighting was a pain, I rather enjoyed the warmth! :).

Freak Snow

This picture is from back in September! We had a freak snow storm here in Calgary this year and this guy did not seem to stoked to be walking around in it haha. I could tell he was a nice relaxed kind of guy though, because I had to get extremely close to him to get this shot and he didn’t mind. I was shooting an ultra wide angle lens at 16mm (actually 24mm on the crop sensor camera), which isn’t exactly your ideal street photography focal length. I was actually just there to get a skyline shot, then I saw him walking along and decided to snap a photo.

Down Centre Street

Here’s a picture from when you could walk outside with comfortable clothes on! haha. This is the view looking south down across the Centre Street Bridge here in Calgary.

I don’t post vertical pictures very often, so I’m not sure about what size I should post them at. Let me know if this is to big or not.

Princes Island Bridge

Just a random shot I took the other day while I was walking across the Princes Island Bridge here in Calgary. It’s kind of a wired bridge because you can feel it kind of bouncing a little bit when your standing on it. In any case, I like the view from this bridge :).

Beautiful Penticton, BC

I had been to Penticton, British Columba a couple of times before my last trip this past summer, however it was on this tip I really fell in love with the place. On my pervious visits, it was always a day trip. This summer I had the pleasure of spending a few days there and I got the chance to really take a look around and see what the place had to offer. I am 100% a city guy, however I could see my self living in a town like Penticton.

When I shot this photo I was just walking back to my car. I stopped to shoot the scene and thought if I waited till some people came walking by and caught them right in the middle of those trees it would be a better photo. I think I was right :).
