Penny Boarding Honolulu

My son’s and I brought our Penny Boards to Honolulu and it was the best thing ever. We used those boards everyday and I especially loved it because at night I would skate around taking pictures and I could cover a lot more ground than I would if I was just walking. Anyhow, here are a few pictures of us on the boards.

DIY Deadcat Mic Windscreen

I made a DIY video on how to make a Deadcat style windscreen out of the tail of a stuffed cat (teddy bear) haha. I did a couple tests and it worked really good! If you care about your video’s audio you might like this video. 🙂

Ice Skating Time Lapse

Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2015 was good to you and 2016 is even better 😀.

Yesterday evening I went down to the ice skating rink at Olympic Plaza here in Calgary. I set up my GoPro Hero 4 Silver on a Joby Gorillapod Focus onto a fence that was guarding some lights the city had set up. Once I framed up my shot and let the shutter go I thought I might shoot some photos, however it was colder than I had anticipated and ended up keeping my hands in my pockets 😅. Unfortunately I had also forgot my phone in my car, so I couldn’t even do a Periscope or do some Instagraming! However, all that was probably for the best anyhow, because the fence I set up camera up on was a temporary fence and prone to shaking easy if anyone decided to lean on it or anything. So there I stood, keeping guard as if the fence was surrounding some precious treasure haha. I can tell you with certainty that this part of the evening was not fun. Standing around in a 6 foot area by yourself in the freezing cold (trying not look like a weirdo) with no phone or anyone to talk to for over an hour is not a good time. With that said, I am still happy I went down there because I think the time lapse turned out kind of cool. 🙂

Joshua’s 1st Saints Game

rob moses exif data Canon 50D 70-200mm 2.8 isMy son Joshua (#18) is playing “Timbits” hockey this year. The team he plays for is called the Saints and they had their first real game on Saturday. Joshua had a really great game and scored 7 goals for his team! What a guy, I couldn’t have been more proud of him :). I didn’t get a shot of the crowed, as they were up and behind me and I only brought my 70-200mm. I can tell you for sure though, the crowd was fired up and really into the game. It was a super fun atmosphere.

Usually I shoot hockey pictures with my 5D mark iii, but this time I decided to bring a crop sensor camera (Canon 50D) for the extra reach. I had never been to this area before and I wasn’t sure where I was going be shooting from, so I figured I’d better have that extra reach incase I was going to be far off. The 50D’s auto focus isn’t exactly renowned and the same could be said for the high ISO capabilities. The pictures turned out ok, but the noise turned out to be more of an issue than I had anticipated. Ah well, live and learn! I’ll be shooting the next game with the 5D for sure.

Ice Skating in The City

Camera: Canon 6D & 17-40L @ 17mm ~ Settings: f/4 – 1/10th – ISO 2500

Last week I went down to the Olympic Plaza ice skating rink downtown here in Calgary. It was a little chilly out and my hands got rather cold while I was shooting these photos. I had gloves with me, but I they weren’t really doing the trick. For the first picture I had to stand there with my hand over the shutter button waiting for the right gust of wind so I could capture the flags blowing. Of course this plan of action didn’t exactly help my cold hand situation haha. I didn’t get the flag exactly how I wanted, but it was close enough for the weather conditions. 😉

Flames vs Rangers

Last night I went to the hockey game (as I often do). The Calgary Flames were hosting the New York Rangers and this time I decided I’d try to bring a camera along. I didn’t want to bring a proper DSLR with a big white lens that screams “HEY LOOK AT ME! I’M TAKING PICTURES!” lol. So I grabbed my Samsung NX100 Mirrorless with a 18-200mm OIS lens. I got to cap off a few shots during the first period, but then during the 2nd some one that works for the Saddledome (Flames Arena) came and told me I couldn’t take pictures with a camera that had interchangeable lenses. I kind of knew even that camera would be a problem, but figured it was wroth a try :).

Ice Skating Downtown

This is the Olympic Plaza ice skating rink downtown in Calgary. I took this around 1pm on Monday and as you can see there wasn’t a lot of people there. This might be an ideal time to do some skating if you’re looking to avoid crowds :). It’s a nice setting right downtown and the subway stops pretty much right across the street. I might have to make my way down there with my skates one of these days.

Skateboard Selfie!

I’m taking it back to the old school here with this dorky skateboarding self-portrait I shot yesterday haha. I had 2 flashes set up for this shot. I had one 580ex ii on camera left about the hight of the top stair pointing up and another on camera right about shoulder height. I trigged the camera with a Canon RC-1 remote, which is in my right hand pointing at the camera :).

City Park View

I shot this picture from my favourite park in the city. It’s called Princes Island Park and it is right downtown in Calgary (well uptown really). In the winter time this pond is frozen and lit up for ice skating. I’ll go down there this winter and get some pictures of people skating. The thing I love about this park is you can walk around by the water and have a nice views of the city through the trees. It kind of has a Central Park(in NYC) feel, but miniature size on every level haha. In any case, I love this park an there are a lot of good pictures to be had. I’ll get down there this weekend and take some more pictures before all the leaves fall off the trees.
