The Moon

Aperture f/22

Aperture f/22

On my way home from a lovely evening spent and at an Italian restaurant downtown last night, I noticed the moon look pretty clear. As soon as I got home I quickly got my gear together and ran back out the door. I think I would have got a better shot if I was about an hour and a half earlier. Maybe I will actually plan my next moon shot out haha.

I shot this photo with a Canon FL 500mm f/5.6 with a 2X Vivitar Tele Converter on a Sony NEX-7 mirrorless camera. The total focal length with set up is a whooping 1500mm! As I was shooting the photo you could actually watch the moon moving across the frame! I never seen anything like it. As I was trying to focus I was mesmerized but the movement, it was an amazing thing to see. The shot could be a little better, but I am happy with my first attempt.

Canon vs Sony 70-200mm

I have been shooting a decent amount with my Sony a7R these days and I have run into some auto focus speed issues along the way. I have found that Sony’s hit rate of moving subjects is noticeably lower than what I have been used to with my Canon gear. This issue rang especially true while I was shooting some soccer this summer with the Sony E-mount 70-200mm f4 G OSS. Since I have a Canon EF 70-200mm f4 IS I thought it might be interesting to do a little real world test of these to lenses head to head. Even thought I had an idea of how the test would go from my past experiences with both lenses, I was surprised at end result of this one.

For this video I employed my two children to help me out. My 6 year old son Joshua was my 2nd camera man and my 4 year old son Cameron was the test subject :). Oh and by the way, if you have a youtube account please subscribe to my channel. I am going to try and do a lot more videos than I have been doing. YouTube.com/user/RobMoses 👍

Skateboarding in Airdrie

Rob Moses sony nex-7 fisheye exif data

I was skateboarding at a skate park in a town 10 minutes north of the city yesterday. While I was there I noticed this guy skating one of the hand rails there and he was landing everything he tried. Prefect candidate to shoot a few photos of, so I asked him if that was cool. He was good with the photos, so I shot a few and amazingly he handed every singe trick with what looked to be “ease”. The guy is awesome! Unfortunately I didn’t catch his name, but I gave him my card and told him to email me and I’d send him the pictures. If he emails me I’ll update this post.

My Favourite 3 Cameras

Sony NEX-7 16mm exif data Rob Moses

I had the Sony Fisheye Converter on for the above photo.

Although I have been known to shoot other brands of cameras here and there, Canon is my favourite. These 3 cameras in particular are my current favourites. The Cameras are a Canon 5D Mark iii, 1D Mark iii & a 6D. I know it’s kind of silly to have all 3 of these (not to mention all the other cameras I have), however they all have their uses where for me they shine the best. The 5D Mark iii is good for just about everything and I use it as such. The 1D Mark iii is great for sports when you need that quick frame per second (10 fps) and the 6D is nice to just walk around with and share photos quickly via the cameras wifi. They are all great cameras and if I had to choose just one it would be a very difficult choice.

City Selfie

Camera: Sony NEX-7 & 16mm f/2.8 with Sony Fisheye Converter ~ Settings: f/16 – 1/40th – ISO 400

I was out there shooting photos again yesterday and while I was getting some shots from the top of a parking garage I decided to snap a little selfie for myself. Gotta show my funny looking face around here from time to time ;).

The 2nd photo was from another day. I had the sunroof of my car open one day and while I was sitting in traffic I looked up out the roof. I thought it looked kind of cool, so I grabbed the camera sitting on my passenger seat and snapped a quick shot off before traffic started moving again.

Colorful Condos

Camera: Sony NEX-7 & 16mm f/2.8 with Sony Fisheye Converter ~ Settings: f/16 – 1/800th – ISO 1600

These types of newer style condos are everywhere in Vancouver, BC. When I was editing this photo my wife walked by and even asked me, “That’s crazy, is that Vancouver?” haha. Even though I agree it is very Vancouver’esk, this is indeed in here in Calgary.

Note: I made a rookie mistake in these shots. I had turned the iso way up for another photo and forgot to turn it back down before shooting these. WHOOPS!

Another Skyline

Just another Calgary skyline shot here for ya on a Monday :). I think this picture will be better once some more of those buildings on the left are done. This one is better viewed in a larger size. If you’d like to see it larger you can find it big on my Facebook page here: Facebook.com/RobMosesPhotography.

Ice Skating Downtown

This is the Olympic Plaza ice skating rink downtown in Calgary. I took this around 1pm on Monday and as you can see there wasn’t a lot of people there. This might be an ideal time to do some skating if you’re looking to avoid crowds :). It’s a nice setting right downtown and the subway stops pretty much right across the street. I might have to make my way down there with my skates one of these days.

Cold Calgary Night

This shot has a super urban feel to me and makes Calgary look very dense. I shot the photo on a cold winter night and I think you can tell. Well you can’t tell like it was Buffalo NY, but trust me, it was cold! haha.

The Skipping Stone Bridge

I have been meaning to make my way down to the new Skipping Stone Bridge for some night shots for a while now and finally made it out last night. Although you can’t tell from this picture, I can assure you it was freezing out! Even with the cold, I am glad I went out. The view from the bridge is great and I’m a sucker for a good city view.

I think this picture looks a lot better in a larger size. I suggest stopping by my Facebook Page at Facebook.com/RobMosesPhotography to view it in a much larger size.

Fall Was Nice

I’d say we had a pretty decent fall here in Calgary this year. The two prior falls I experienced in Calgary were a lot shorter and winter blasted in from out of no where. This year it kind of eased its way into winter and I was able to adapt and mentally prepare for the Eskimo lifestyle I was about to endure. I took this picture a week or so ago, it has since snowed and this time it’s not melting away.

Princes Island Bridge

Just a random shot I took the other day while I was walking across the Princes Island Bridge here in Calgary. It’s kind of a wired bridge because you can feel it kind of bouncing a little bit when your standing on it. In any case, I like the view from this bridge :).
