Paul

This a friend of mine, Paul. We met up around midnight, downtown in Calgary. The time might seem odd and it is, but for this particular picture it had to be late at night. You see, Paul is standing in the middle of the street at busy (during the day) intersection. I wanted to shoot this photo in this location because the street behind Paul has all these lights on the trees and I thought it would make for a nice/interesting blurry background. The 2nd shot was actually the very first picture I took of Paul that night. I was just shooting it to test the light. To be honest that first test shot is probably my favourite shot of the night haha.

For this shot I used one flash shot into a bounce umbrella to slight camera left. The flashed I used was a Canon 550EZ. I used Yongnuo 622C ii triggers on my Fujifilm X-T1 to fire the flash.

Abandoned House Mannequin

Last weekend a friend of mine and I went out to High River, Alberta to check out this abandoned neighbourhood. The whole neighbourhood was built on in a flood zone and of course it had been flooded. The province(state) decided the residence could no longer live there so they bought everyone out. Anyhow, we walked around and checked out the scene and there really wants much to see, just looked like an empty neighbourhood because all the house are too new and the city is still cutting the grass. Once it got dark we dragged this mannequin into the neighbourhood (you could not drive in) and set it up in front  of this house for some weirdo shots haha.

We used one LED to camera left, another to camera right behind the tree lighting up house and one Canon 580EX ii Speedlite directly behind the mannequin for rim light.

It’s kind of a weird picture, but we had fun taking it! 🙂

Fujifilm X-E1 & Canon 50mm 1.2

I picked up this Fujifilm X-E1 on consignment the other day when I was down at my local camera shop. The body was there for $250, so I thought why not. At that price you can’t really go wrong. The screen has some scratches on it, but that kind of thing doesn’t bother me. I got my vintage Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 on the camera and have been testing it out for the past week. Everyday I learn something new about the camera and I think I am close to figuring out the settings so the jpegs come out the way I like. FYI, I have been shooting raw since forever, but the Fuji JPEGs are supposed to be what’s up so I’m moseying down that road right now.

The pictures bellow (except for the camera shot) are just some random shots I took with the camera. All the photos are straight out of the camera with no edits applied to the pictures. From one picture to the next I had wished I made a little adjustment here or there, but I am getting closer to what I want as the days go on. I am sure by this time next week I’ll have that thing dialled in perfect, well perfect for me at least haha.

Little Skateboarder – Stills & Video

On Saturday afternoon my 6 year old son Cameron and I went for a little skate downtown. We were heading to the very popular Peace Bridge to get a shot of Cameron on his skateboard in the middle of the bridge. However, when we got there the wind was blowing like crazy and it was kind of a bad scene. We decided to hit the streets in search of a new spot to shoot a photo. We found a spot with smooth cement, places to leave our gear and set up our cameras with very little interruption from passerbyers.

Not only did we shoot photos, but we were also rolling video on the whole thing for my vlog. I didn’t realize how many times I had Cam push off on his skateboard for the photo until I was going over the video footage at home. I didn’t count how many times he did it, but it was a at least 30 times! For a 6 year old to have that kind of patience on a photo shoot is amazing. I also noticed he took direction very well. I was super impressed by all of this at the time, but even more so after the fact. I think he’d make a good little actor or model if he wanted to go down that road. For now I think we’ll just stick to the skateboarding though ;).

Calgary Wedding Indoors: Madiha & Raheel

exif-data-rob-moses-settings-canon-5d-mark-iii-ef-28-70mm-f2-8-lAs you can imagine a wedding in Calgary in February is going to be indoors for the most part. Mariah and Raheel’s wedding was no exception, well except for this one picture of course! haha. We pretty much just ran out the back door of the hotel, shot this photo and ran back in! The rest of the wedding was held inside the hotel. This wedding was a short one for me, but it was 100 miles and hour the whole time!

When you only got so much time to get your shots there is a lot of quick shooting invovled and you tend to move around a little fast than you might normally go. At this wedding there wasn’t a moment I wasn’t taking pictures. Ok well, I did stop for 5 minutes to enjoy some of the amazing indian food! I’m not a crazy person after all, if there is indian food around you can bet I’ll be hold’n down a plate with the best of them ;). So after my blazing fast meal it was back to the shooting! Indian weddings are always so much fun, I didn’t get to stick around this one for the partying, but hopefully next time :).

Best Photographer Finalist

So last month I got an email that said (among other things) “You were recommended for the Calgary Event Awards as an amazing event photographer”, I’ll leave out all the other boring stuff, but that line pretty much says it all. Anything like that is always nice to hear, so with that email I tossed my hat in the ring. Then a week or so later I got another email that read “Calgary Event Awards 2017 – Finalists” and then “Congratulations!” blah, blah, blah. Nice! I guess some other people kinda like what I do too. So as it turns out I’m up for Best Photographer and it’s between two other photographers and myself. The awards are on March 2nd, so I’ll be sure and let you guys know if I win or not. 🙂

Orange

exif-data-rob-moses-5d-mark-iii-100mmI shot this photo with the help of a friend of mine. We sliced the orange and then put it between 2 panes of glass and set it up standing. We had one Canon 580ex ii (triggered by pocket wizards) set up directly behind the orange. We then took a piece of paper with a hole cut into it. While I shot the photo my friend held the paper right behind the orange. Shooting this photo took a bit of work, but it was a lot of fun doing it!

I Instagram Lived this whole photo shoot. So if your on Instagram you should give me a follow (@RobMoses) and catch me on the next shoot live :).

Wine

exif-data-rob-moses-canon-5d-mark-iii-100mm-f2-8-macro-is-usmThis was a fun picture to take. I had one large softbox set up to camera right. The background was a board with a bunch of white lights stuck to it with crinkled tinfoil stuck in between them. I shot this handheld while a friend of mine poured the wine into the glass. We made a bit of mess, but it was definitely worth the trouble.🍷😀

Wedding in The Mountains: Kelsey & Ryan

exif-data-rob-moses-canon-5d-mark-iii-24-70mm-f2-8-lI had such a wonderful time shooting this wedding! I won’t bore with all the reasons why, but in short Ryan is family, he’s a cool guy along with his wife and all their friends were fun to be around. Now clearly Kelsey & Ryan chose a beautiful location for their wedding. Anytime in Banff is a good time, but when your shooting photo of people you know and love, it is extra special and that is exactly how this day went.

Straight away in the morning I went over to Ryan’s hotel room where the men were getting ready. These guys were having a time as the men tend to do, cheers’n and watching “How to tie a tie” videos on YouTube and what not ;). I tried not to get in the way, shot some photos and then scooted over to the room where Kelsey and the ladies were getting ready. The good times were also rolling over there, although a little more civilized fun times were defiantly going on.

The ceremony was beautiful as you would expect a Banff ceremony to be. This was followed by some group shots and then the wedding party and I took off to our first location which was just behind the hotel. Now you couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day, except for this little breeze that was causing a bit of a ruckus. Right as we were set up to shoot one of our first formal photos the wind got so crazy my very heavy tripod with its flash blew right over, I turned to see it fall and when I looked back up Kelsey’s veil was flying off in the wind down the steep hill behind her! Lucky for the fast action of Ryan and his brother they were able to retrieve the veil without tumbling down the hill themselves. That veil taking off ended up working out though, as I think the shot we got was better without it.

Our next location was up a gondola to the top of a beautiful mountain overlooking the Rockies! Again, the location was out of this world and again, , , so was that wind!😅 Right when we got there we had this group of tourists ask to take a picture with the bridesmaids (bride & groom were MIA), that was hilarious, then another couple ask to get some shots with the bride and groom! Celebrity status was going down on that mountain for sure. Anyhow, the views were amazing and the walk to the peak was filled with laughter and joy. Shooting photos was easy up there, because when you have a beautiful couple and a backdrop to die for the book kind of writes itself.

I could go on and on about this wedding, but I won’t because this post is already insanely long. I will leave you with this, if you want to have the wedding of a life time, get your family together and head to Banff, Alberta Canada! Congratulations Ryan & Kelsey and thanks for taking me a long for the ride. 😉

A Shot with Joshua

exif-data-rob-moses-canon-eos-6d-70-200mm-f4-isIt’s not often I get to have a picture with my son Joshua. You would think I have tons, but unfortunately I don’t! I have decided that is all going to change and I am going to make more of an effort to get in pictures with my children. They grow so fast and it seems like I barely have any pictures of me with them. Here’s to a good start. 🙂

exif-data-rob-moses-canon-5d-mark-iii-70-300mm-doI rarely post head shots here, but I really like how the lighting turned out on this one. Shadows can be your best friend when shooting portraits and I’d say that is the case for this photo. For this shot I had one Canon 580EX ii to camera left shot through a white umbrella.

New West Wedding Styles

exif-data-rob-moses-canon-7d-10-20mmI have a bunch of wedding photos that I posted to my old blog that shall never see the light of day again. I thought I would grab some of my favourite ones and post them on here from time to time.

I shot this one a while back in New Westminster, BC. The location was one that I often used and is one of my favourite locations in the city of Vancouver. I used one Canon Speedlite (Probably a 550EX) shot through a white umbrella to camera right. I used to shoot a lot more off camera flash back then, something I plan on doing more of these days.

Lighting

exif data rob moses canon 6d 300mm f:2.8Nature is awesome! Right before I took this picture I actually had my camera pointed in the opposite direction. I was shooting some photos of the Calgary skyline when I noticed some flashing going on behind me. Excited at the prospect of getting a lighting bolt picture I spun my camera around and started snapping. I love how the lighting was lighting up the clouds and sky around the immediate area. Nature can put on quite the show if you find yourself in the right place at the right time. 🙂
