Calgary Wedding Indoors: Madiha & Raheel

exif-data-rob-moses-settings-canon-5d-mark-iii-ef-28-70mm-f2-8-lAs you can imagine a wedding in Calgary in February is going to be indoors for the most part. Mariah and Raheel’s wedding was no exception, well except for this one picture of course! haha. We pretty much just ran out the back door of the hotel, shot this photo and ran back in! The rest of the wedding was held inside the hotel. This wedding was a short one for me, but it was 100 miles and hour the whole time!

When you only got so much time to get your shots there is a lot of quick shooting invovled and you tend to move around a little fast than you might normally go. At this wedding there wasn’t a moment I wasn’t taking pictures. Ok well, I did stop for 5 minutes to enjoy some of the amazing indian food! I’m not a crazy person after all, if there is indian food around you can bet I’ll be hold’n down a plate with the best of them ;). So after my blazing fast meal it was back to the shooting! Indian weddings are always so much fun, I didn’t get to stick around this one for the partying, but hopefully next time :).

Trail, British Columbia

I was visiting some family in Castlegar, BC over Easter and while there I took a little trip to the neighbouring town of Trail to take some pictures. This is probably one of the better shots. It’s a nice little town with a river running through it, but it seems to get  bad rap because of that massive factory/plant that kind of hangs over the town haha. Makes for interesting pictures at least ;).

Fun at Canon Image Square

On Saturday a friend of mine and I met up downtown for a street photography mission. We started walking up 8th Avenue shooting random photos of people walking by and interesting things we saw. As we were walking along something very interesting caught my eye, it was the Canon Image Square. I had heard about this place and had been meaning to go check it out. It looks like Canon only camera store, but they don’t sell anything! They got every lens and camera Canon makes and you can try them all out! They also have a little studio space you can rent out.

One of the fun things they have is all these little mini world scenes set up for you to test out the cameras and lenses. At first I was just using my own Canon 5D mark iii & 50mm 1.4 & 28mm 1.8, but then I decided to give their 8-15mm Fisheye a go, WHOA! What fun little lens. Once I got that on I was burning around shooting up a storm as fast as I could since I knew my friend wanted to get back to the streets. I think we’ll head back again when we got more time, because I could spend hours in that place and I’m sure I will! haha. Anyhow, if you live in or around Calgary and your interested in photography this place is a MUST! It’s at 545 8th Avenue SW in the city. If you make it there I hope you had as much fun as I did! 😉

Bokeh In The House

Some times you just gotta shoot f/1.2 and let the bokeh do the talking. 😉

Canon 50mm 1.8 vs 1.2

Canon 50mm 1.8 vs 1.2 24-85mm Bokeh L Prime Zoom - Rob Moses PhotographyThis photo was shot with Canon 5D mark ii & Canon 24-85mm @85mm & f/4.5

I did a little comparison between 2 of my favourite lenses, the Canon 50mm 1.8 mark i & the 50L. With a price differnce of at least $1500, the case one can make to buy the 50L can only be made by absolutely NEEDing that f1.2 for shooting low light. You can not buy the Canon 50mm 1.8 mark 1 in stores any more, but you should be able to find a used one for around $150 to $200. The Canon 50mm 1.2 L series lens on the other hand can be found in most camera stores for around $1619. before taxes.

For this test I shot with a Canon 5D mark ii on a Manfrotto tripod. The photos were shot on my deck in the shade. The first shot to the last shot was done in under 2 minutes and the light outside never changed in that time frame. None of the pictures have any sharpening and are basically straight out of the camera except for a little S curve in Lightroom. I shot the all the photos with a little exposure compensation on the bright side.

Here is what the set up looked like.

That’s it! Hope you enjoyed that. I’d say if your not shooting super low light and can live with out f1.2 you really wont miss much with the Canon 50mm 1.8 mark i. You can get the mark ii for around $120, but the build quality is terrible and the auto focus is not as accurate as with the mark i, however it is still a great lens.

My 5D Mark iii & 1D Mark iiN

Canon 5D 5Diii mark 3 5D3 1D iiN 2n DSLR Camera Digital - Rob Moses Photography - Canadian 50L Celbrity 50mm 7D famous 16-35mm Photographer

A lot of people get hung up on having the latest and greatest of gear in the hopes that the camera will make them a better photographer. This does have a little bit of truth to it, but as far as camera bodies go, I don’t believe that truth carries much weight. Lenses is a whole another bag of worms I’ll get into another day.

For example, the two camera bodies I have pictured here are my two go to bodies. The Canon 5D Mark iii is a wonderful camera that pretty much as everything anyone could ask for in a body. However, I still love shooting with my old Canon 1D Mark iiN. In fact I shoot with it quite often as long as the conditions(decent lighting) are right. Sure the screen isn’t tac sharp and your not going to impress anyone with your old camera, but the auto focus is great, fast fps and most importantly it produces great image quality. Oh and if some one tries to robb you, you can knock them out with your camera because it’s like hitting someone with a bag of bricks!

Anyhow, I just wanted to show the Canon 1D Mark iiN a little love because it seems people have pretty much written off this camera. I understand the allure of the new bodies like the 5D Mark iii, but an old body can still give you great results. I use my oldie all the time! 🙂
