Mustachio

rob-moses-exif-data-canon-5d-mark-iii-50mm-1-4I was kicking around the Kensington neighbourhood here in Calgary on Saturday night when I spotted this guy on the street. You could see the mustachio pop’n off right away and there was no way I wasn’t going to get a picture. I just walked up to him and said “Hey man, can I take your picture?” He said “Sure!” he smiled, I took the shot and it was all over in about 8 to 10 seconds. I love these kind of quick interactions with strangers on the street, it always makes for a more interesting night.

Surprise Fireworks

exif data rob moses sony a7ii 70-200mm OSS f4 GI was out shooting the Calgary skyline last night when all of a sudden I noticed some fireworks popping off in the distance! Unfortunately the longest lens I had with me (and only lens) was my 70-200mm. With some extreme cropping, all turned out just fine haha.

Skateboarding in Airdrie

Rob Moses sony nex-7 fisheye exif data

I was skateboarding at a skate park in a town 10 minutes north of the city yesterday. While I was there I noticed this guy skating one of the hand rails there and he was landing everything he tried. Prefect candidate to shoot a few photos of, so I asked him if that was cool. He was good with the photos, so I shot a few and amazingly he handed every singe trick with what looked to be “ease”. The guy is awesome! Unfortunately I didn’t catch his name, but I gave him my card and told him to email me and I’d send him the pictures. If he emails me I’ll update this post.

City Sculpture

Calgary spends a lot of money on public art and this particular piece is one of my favourite. I’m not really sure what it’s suppose to be (if anything), but I like it :).

Flames Win!

Last night the Calgary Flames played their first game of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs and I was down on the Red Mile to take it all in! I won’t give you a run down of the game because it’s late and I need to get to bed (I’m writing this at 12:20am), but all you need to know is the Flames won! When the Flames scored with 30 seconds left in the 3rd period the place I was in exploded! It was an unreal atmosphere and the city was on fire! Hopefully they Flames can keep it roll’n on Fridays game :).

Flames Burning The Canucks

Camera: Canon 6D & 28mm 1.8 ~ Settings: f/14 – 1/125th – ISO 400

If you’re a hockey fan than you probably know the Calgary Flames have made the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs! And if your from Calgary, you know we are playing our arch rivals the Vancouver Canucks in the first round. So to kick things off right around here I had to let it be known how it’s going down. We’ll be burning those bastards up from the first puck drop! 😀

Now about the photo. I had my Canon 6D set up on a tripod and triggered the camera with my Canon RC-1 remote. I had another tripod to camera left with a Canon 580EX ii pointing at me. Since I am originally from Vancouver, I had a jersey collecting dust in my closet. I didn’t actually burn the jersey though, for 2 reasons. One, I’m from Vancouver and still like that jersey haha. And 2, it was really windy and even if I could get the jersey to burn the flames wouldn’t have gone straight up and effect wouldn’t be nearly as dramatic. After I did the initial edit of the photo I photoshopped in the flames burning the jersey.

I expect to take a lot of flack from all my Vancouver friends and family over this picture haha. But I’ve been in Calgary for 3 years now and I started backing up this team the day I got here. As soon as that first hockey season started 3 years ago I was a straight up traitor Calgary Flame. For me it’s all about the home team and this is my home now. GO FLAMES!

Jumping Around

I have been spending a lot of time up at the ski hill these days (snowboarding). While I was up there on Christmas eve day I set my self up by a kicker and shot some photos of people jumping. I shot all photos with a Canon 5D mark iii & 24-105mm f/4 IS. I shot in aperture priority at f/11 & ISO 800, the shutter was hovering around the 1/1600th range.

Snow Rainbow

Camera: Canon 5D mark iii & 50mm 1.4 ~ Settings: f/20 – 1/160th – ISO 200

I’m sure there must be a scientific name for this snowy weather phenomenon, but I don’t know it, so I’m going with “snow rainbow” haha. I never really seen anything like it before. There was a bunch of tiny bits of snow kind of floating and blowing around and it caused this crazy rainbow light and a strange atmosphere. I’m not crazy about landscapes, but if I could get bizarre light like this more often, I’d shoot these type of photos more regularly :).

Flames vs Rangers

Last night I went to the hockey game (as I often do). The Calgary Flames were hosting the New York Rangers and this time I decided I’d try to bring a camera along. I didn’t want to bring a proper DSLR with a big white lens that screams “HEY LOOK AT ME! I’M TAKING PICTURES!” lol. So I grabbed my Samsung NX100 Mirrorless with a 18-200mm OIS lens. I got to cap off a few shots during the first period, but then during the 2nd some one that works for the Saddledome (Flames Arena) came and told me I couldn’t take pictures with a camera that had interchangeable lenses. I kind of knew even that camera would be a problem, but figured it was wroth a try :).

Snowboarding Brothers

Sorry I haven’t been posting much these days. I recently bought a new place and just moved. So the last week has been nothing but packing and then unpacking! Yesterday I found a little time to have some fun in the front yard with my 2 boys to do some snowboarding on a the very gradual slope in front of our house haha.

After 2 runs of holding hands with my youngest son Cameron, I told him to just stand at the starting point so I could take a picture of him standing there. While I was adjusting the settings my camera I looked up to him zipping down the hill on his own haha. He picked it up really fast and loves it. My older son Joshua (5 years old) was also doing a lot better than the pervious year and seemed to enjoy it a lot more too!

Can’t wait for the ski hills to open this year! 🙂

Kananaskis Country

I took a drive an hour west of the city this weekend to a little place known as Kananaskis Country. There really isn’t much out there, but the forest, mountains and whatever nature has to offer. Since I live right in the city, from time to time a trip to a remote place like Kananaskis is exactly what I need. The weather was kind of wired the day I was there. In the photo it was raining behind the first mountain and sunny where I shot the photo from. The weather situation made for a dramatic picture.
