Paul

This a friend of mine, Paul. We met up around midnight, downtown in Calgary. The time might seem odd and it is, but for this particular picture it had to be late at night. You see, Paul is standing in the middle of the street at busy (during the day) intersection. I wanted to shoot this photo in this location because the street behind Paul has all these lights on the trees and I thought it would make for a nice/interesting blurry background. The 2nd shot was actually the very first picture I took of Paul that night. I was just shooting it to test the light. To be honest that first test shot is probably my favourite shot of the night haha.

For this shot I used one flash shot into a bounce umbrella to slight camera left. The flashed I used was a Canon 550EZ. I used Yongnuo 622C ii triggers on my Fujifilm X-T1 to fire the flash.

Golden City

Canon FD 50mm f/1.2

Some pretty amazing sunsets go down around here. This sunset was one of them! The clouds kind of look like they are rolling over the city. I love catching a scene like this, with or without my camera.

Spring Nights

Lens: Canon FD 50mm f/1.2

Spring nights in Calgary can be beautiful. The city lights always do the right thing for me and this night was no different. The lights were bright and the sky was amazing, can’t ask for much more than that to take a nice city picture.

Crazy Plants

I was out taking pictures one night downtown in Calgary when I saw these crazy looking plants. They had some LED lights shinning on them and they would change color every few seconds. I though it looked kind of cool so I grabbed a quick shot. I shot this photo with my Sony a7ii & Canon FD 50mm f/1.2. I can’t remember my exact settings 100%, but I think I was at f/2.

Happy Halloween

Now this is one heck of costume! I saw this person walking around downtown in Calgary this past weekend. I spotted this big happy looking red thing walking down the street about a block away. I quickly scurried over to the corner of the street I thought they were going to cross at, then a train went by and they were across on the other side! I ran over just in time to get the shot. Since I was shooting manual focus, it was no easy feat to get the shot in a hurry! Lucky for me it all worked out. 🙂

Blue & Red

Everyone seems to shoot photos at this bridge in Calgary, and why not its beautiful! I have been here a bunch of times, but on this occasion I decided to stand balancing on the back part of one of the benches there to get a little extra hight. I shot this one handheld with my Sony a7ii & Canon FD 50mm f/1.2. I can’t remember my exact settings, I think I was shooting around f/5.6 or so. I have said this before, but the image stabilization on the a7ii is just wonderful.

Oh and that title! Well you know, blue night and a red bridge. 😉

Just got a couple of people having their picture taken twice! I doubt they will ever see this one though ;). I shot this one in manual focus with my Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 at 1.2. I love that lens! The 2nd photo isn’t as cool, but I thought it was still worth sharing.

Just barely caught these two walking by. I wanted to get the front of them, but I could get my settings were I needed them to be in time. I shot this with my awesome 1970’s Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 wide open. I took 2 shots, the first one was a little out of focus and this one hit pretty close :). The 2nd shot is just a random picture from the same set up and same night.

Sony a7ii & Canon 50mm 1.2

I recently got a grip for my Sony a7ii. The grip is an aftermarket brand called Vello. The grip makes holding onto this camera feel way better and I am sure because of it I will reach for this camera more often than I do. The lens I have on the camera is a Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 manual focus lens from the 1970’s. Not only does this combination look awesome, it’s  produces awesome results! I added a photo I shot bellow that I took with this set up right after I took a picture of the camera. Oh and FYI, I shot the photo bellow handheld in the dead of night around 11:30pm!

Melissa for Coffee

This is Melissa, she is one of the realtors I work with. Yesterday I heard her say she was heading to a coffee shop by our office, so I cased her down so I could get a picture of her. She didn’t want to have her picture taken since I didn’t give her any warning, but I insisted :). I took this right in front of the coffee shop and I shot a few frames. Melissa actually preferred another shot I took of her where she wasn’t smiling so much. I thought she looked so happy in this picture, so I decided to use this one anyhow haha.

While my son Cameron and I where up in Edmonton the other week we decided to swing by the West Edmonton Mall to hit the arcade. Cameron ripped through about $35 pretty quick haha. He definitely had a good time though :).

My son Cameron and I took a little trip up to Edmonton, Alberta this past weekend. It was a rather rainy and foggy day in Edmonton yesterday and it was a little chilly, so we didn’t get out for many pictures. This shot was the last one I took before we hopped in our car and headed back to Calgary. I love Edmonton and hope to go back again soon! There are so many pictures I want to take there.

Canon 50mm 1.8 vs 1.2

Canon 50mm 1.8 vs 1.2 24-85mm Bokeh L Prime Zoom - Rob Moses PhotographyThis photo was shot with Canon 5D mark ii & Canon 24-85mm @85mm & f/4.5

I did a little comparison between 2 of my favourite lenses, the Canon 50mm 1.8 mark i & the 50L. With a price differnce of at least $1500, the case one can make to buy the 50L can only be made by absolutely NEEDing that f1.2 for shooting low light. You can not buy the Canon 50mm 1.8 mark 1 in stores any more, but you should be able to find a used one for around $150 to $200. The Canon 50mm 1.2 L series lens on the other hand can be found in most camera stores for around $1619. before taxes.

For this test I shot with a Canon 5D mark ii on a Manfrotto tripod. The photos were shot on my deck in the shade. The first shot to the last shot was done in under 2 minutes and the light outside never changed in that time frame. None of the pictures have any sharpening and are basically straight out of the camera except for a little S curve in Lightroom. I shot the all the photos with a little exposure compensation on the bright side.

Here is what the set up looked like.

That’s it! Hope you enjoyed that. I’d say if your not shooting super low light and can live with out f1.2 you really wont miss much with the Canon 50mm 1.8 mark i. You can get the mark ii for around $120, but the build quality is terrible and the auto focus is not as accurate as with the mark i, however it is still a great lens.
