I love old buildings

I love old buildings like this! This one is located on 23rd Ave in Portland, Oregon. 23rd is a wonderful street with a lot of great shops, restaurants and all that good city stuff. I’d imagine the apartments in this building are amazing and walking out onto a wonderful city street like 23rd would be to die for! Maybe one day ;).

Head of Security

This gigantic public art piece downtown in Calgary is a very popular photo stop for locals and tourist. It is with good reason too because the head is awesome! Security around this head is a little overboard though. For instance, don’t even think of climbing on it or even pretending to climb, security will be out there in a hurry busting your ass! haha. Also, they won’t let you use a tripod anywhere near it or on the property of the building, so you have to shoot your tripod photos from the sidewalk. I don’t know what that’s all bout, but whatever. Anyhow, the head is still cool and I like taking pictures of it.

Pioneer Courthouse Square

exif-data-rob-moses-canon-6d-17-40mmJust a little more of Portland here. This spot is defiantly one of my favourite places in Portland. If I grew up here I’m sure I would have ended up hold’n it down at this place a lot. There are so many places to sit, the trains go by here in every direction, there is a Starbucks and there are beautiful buildings surrounding it. These are all things that make for a wicked meet up spot in my mind. It kind of reminds me (in that way) of the Art Gallery in Vancouver, BC. Always people hanging out and events from time to time. I’m sure I’ll be back here sooner than later!

exif data rob moses canon 6d 70-200mm f4 isThis is a pretty wicked spot to hang out at! I shot this one while chill’n out pool side in Mexico this winter. I wouldn’t mind being back there right now. Pretty amazing how it could be so awesome all year around. Maybe it’s time I packed up and moved to Florida! 😜

Abandoned

rob moses exif data canon 6d 17-40mmWhen I was down in Mexico recently I had the pleasure of poking around an abandoned section of a resort. From what I heard these places got hit by a hurricane and the people who owned them didn’t have insurance and decided not to brother fixing them up. The site had a bunch of these little houses and a main entrance with a bar and other amenities (will post picture of that place another day). It’s a shame nothing ever became of these places, because even in the shape they are in now, it doesn’t seem like they couldn’t be fixed. I’m sure right after the hurricane they were in much better shape too. Oh well, I guess the people who owned them must have been in a tight spot. Too bad!

4th Street Lights

exif data rob moses canon fd 20mm 2.8 ssc a7ii

Sony a7ii & Canon FD 20mm 2.8 SSC

The lights that line 4th Street in Calgary are wonderful at night. I wish all the streets looked like this. For this shot I had waited till some cars were waiting for the light to change, that way the street wouldn’t just be streaks of light. When shooting long exposures on the street it’s hard to get a proper feel for how alive the scene is. The lack of people in the shots is probably the biggest contributing culprit in that regard. If you’re not familiar with shooting long exposures, a person could walk right by you and they wouldn’t show up in the photo (unless a flash hit them). Anyhow, I thought the cars in the shot would help. Cars or no cars, it’s all about them lights though!

A Photo of Taking a Picture

Camera: Canon 6D & 17-40L at 22mm ~ Settings: f/4 – 0.5 seconds – ISO 4000

Last night I went out to shoot some photos downtown. After about 4 different locations I ended up here. At first I was just getting some skyline shots with the fence in the foreground, and then the idea to hop on the fence struck me. I hopped up on the fence triggering my camera with my trusty Canon RC-1 remote. Inspiration struck again with this idea. I shot this photo about 16 different times with a variation of different settings. I had to make sure the shutter didn’t stay open to long, because keeping that arm still enough to keep the phone sharp was quite a challenge. In the end a relatively quick aperture setting and a high ISO did the trick.

Oh and by the way, I didn’t actually take that picture with my phone haha. Getting a half decent shot of the skyline at night handheld with and iPhone 4s is near impossible. And yes I know, I need to update my iPhone ;).

Street Meat & Subways

Camera: Canon 6D & 17-40L at 28mm ~ Settings: f/18 – 1/100th – ISO 400

When I lived in Toronto, we called these hotdog vendors “Street Meat” haha. I’m not sure what they call them in Edmonton, but I’m sure the Street Meat is just as good :). The dome of windows behind the people buying hotdogs is the entry to the subway station. Edmonton got it right on when they decided to put the subway underground downtown straight off the bat. Calgary on the other hand put the train above ground and down a main street downtown. The city said they would put it underground at a later date,,, right! Ya that’s not EVER going to happen. Good job, whoever’s idea that was. Sure would be nice to be in a warm underground subway station in the middle of one of Calgary’s very long and cold winters!
