1st Day of School

Well my 2 boys are off to school again! (1st grade & 3rd grade). It’s always fun taking the kids to their first day of school. I couldn’t get these guys to stay still for a picture together though! They were too excited to get to their friends. Next year I’ll plan that part a little better haha. Anyhow, it’s exciting times at Stanly Jones Elementary and a good day to reflect on another summers past. ūüôā

Hey Guy!

Here is another Fujifilm X-T2 straight out of camera shot (no edits). This guy was parked here and taking pictures looking the other direction. I wanted to get a picture with his face in it, so I yelled “Hey Guy!” haha. Judging by the direction of his eyes he must have thought it was someone else yelling at him. ūü§£

Mexican Stars & Streets

exif-data-rob-moses-canon-6d-28mm-1-8I shot this one last year while I was staying at some resort between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. I didn’t have a tripod with me at the time so I couldn’t get the composition exactly how I would have liked it. I just rested my camera on a ledge and shot a long exposure. Turned out ok, good enough to share anyhow ;). Oh and I just thought I’d add a few¬†random street photography shots from one night when I was walking around Playa Del Carmen.

Stranger in the Grass

Sony a7ii & 55mm

Sony a7ii

I was at one of my favourite skyline view locations in Calgary getting a shot of the city yesterday. While I was there I noticed this man sitting in the grass reading. It looked like the scene out of a movie or something, so I thought it might make a good picture. I walked up the guy and asked him if he minded me taking his picture while he was reading. Lucky for me he was a very friendly person and clearly didn’t mind having his picture taken. After I shot the photo¬†he ask me if I could send him the picture and of course I said I would be happy to do so. A phone number and a text later and I was on my way. Thanks for being so easy going Nick!

Happy Cycling

exif data rob moses canon 6d 50mmI was walking down the street when I noticed the bright red fire truck heading my way. Then the bright and happy cyclist caught my eye. Like an old west gun slinger, I whipped my camera in front of my face and snapped this photo. People like this make the world a better place and Portland is filled with them! ūüôā

Summer Cycle

exif data rob moses canon 6D 28mm 1.8Calgary has some nice biking paths around the city. There are some nice views and great places to stop along the way. I personally wouldn’t be caught cruising around on the paths right now as it is currently 16¬įF out and I’m sure I’d freeze to death and if that didn’t kill me I’d surely hit some ice and crash into something that would take me out¬†haha. However, when summer hits, these paths are wonderful! ;).

Canon vs Sony 70-200mm

I have been shooting a decent amount with my Sony a7R these days and I have run into some auto focus speed issues along the way. I have found that Sony’s hit rate of moving subjects is noticeably lower than what I have been used to with my Canon gear. This issue rang especially true while I was shooting some soccer this summer with the Sony E-mount 70-200mm f4 G OSS. Since I have a Canon EF 70-200mm f4 IS I thought it might be interesting to do a little real world test of these to lenses head to head. Even thought I had an idea of how the test would go from my past experiences with both lenses, I was surprised at end result of this one.

For this video I employed my two children to help me out. My 6 year old son Joshua was my 2nd camera man and my 4 year old son Cameron was the test subject¬†:).¬†Oh and by the way, if you have a youtube account please subscribe to my channel. I am going to try and do a lot more videos than I have been doing. YouTube.com/user/RobMoses¬†ūüĎć

People in Beaulieu Gardens

Sony A7R 70-200mm exif data Rob Moses Photography

The weather has been getting pretty nice around Calgary these days and the people are getting out there and enjoying it! When the people come out, so do I ;). Gotta get them street shots while the street shootings hot!

For these shots I just grabbed nice little seat for my self on the grass, framed up my shot and waited for the people to walk by. A friend of mine lent me his Sony A7R mirrorless camera, so I was using that a long with a Sony 70-200mm f4 G OSS. It’s a pretty slick little set up that produces great results.

Bit Of A Challenge

Camera: Canon 6D & 70-200mm f/2.8 at 200mm ~ Settings: f/11 – 1/320th – ISO 400

So the other day fellow photographer and blogger Steve Boer (www.steveboer.com) passed on 5 day black and white photo challenge to me. The idea is to post black and white photos for 5 days straight. I love black and white, but there aint no way I’m posting 5 black and white shots back to back haha. So I told him I’d post one for one day and that’s the best could do. However, I decided to post 2 (on one day).

With all that said, onto the pictures. These two photos were clearly shot on different days. The first one was shot on a more mild day and the 2nd one a much more cold day (yesterday). You could probably guess from the snow on the ground and the guys ski goggles! lol. This is how I feel about biking, if it’s so cold you gotta strap on the ol ski goggles to take a cruise, then it’s to damn cold for biking! ;).

PS, Although these types of challenges are fun, I probably won’t make a habit of doing them when passed on to me.¬†Just an FYI so I don’t hurt anyones feeling in the future.¬†

These are a couple of pictures I took last summer of my father in-law during his biking part in the Penticton, BC¬†triathlon. If it was me, I’d be cruising¬†on in to the finish line about 10 hours after the race ended lol. Big up to everyone that can do these crazy races!

Winter or Summer ?

The weather has gone completely INSANE in Calgary the last few days. I have been waking up to WINTER! Yet it is still 100% summer! I have experienced the most awful weather since moving here haha, but I have yet to snap and pack my bags to head back to the coast. I’m sure that day will come, but it aint today ;). Here are a couple of pictures from yesterdays winter blast.

Happy Cammy

This shot with an iPhone 4s.

Yesterday I decided it was a good day to take a picture of my younger son Cammy. He is always a good sport when it comes to getting his picture taken, so this shot didn’t take to long :).

The picture on the right just shows the set up I used for this photo. I had a Canon 580EX ii Speedlite shooting into that white bounce umbrella. I was using that heavy Manfrotto tripod instead of a light stand so the wind wouldn’t tip the set up over (I have had that happen before). I triggered the flash with Yongnuo YN-622C transmitters.

Peace on the Peace Bridge

If you like a futuristic bridge, then the Peace Bridge here in Calgary, Canada is the one for you! I shot these photos with a fisheye lens. When I was getting the one of the guy taking a picture of the girl tossing up the “Peace” sign, I almost ran right into them because I was so close! haha. Thankfully¬†they were cool and we had a little laugh :).
