Lake of the Stars

rob moses Canon 5D mark iii 3 16-35mm exif data

Last thursday night I took a little trip to the mountains in and effort to escape the city lights. With me being an urban type of guy, this is some what out of character for me. However, I do enjoy a bit of fresh air and a starry sky from time to time and I have a friend who is all about this type of thing. I gave my friend a call and we hit the road.

After shooting a number of shots from above a little cliff and then in the other direction all together, I decided to try getting some shots down by the lake. I had a square shaped LED flashlight with me and decided to try to see how it would look pointed at my back. I was happy with the first few attempts, but I knew I needed something just a little extra. I thought a little light on the water and in the trees would be just right, so I waited. . . And waited and waited until a I could hear a car approaching. I had the camera on a 10 second timer and a 13 second exposure, so I had hit it just at the right time for me to get the light where I wanted it. Lucky for me my estimation was about right and the light landed right where I wanted it too! That bit of light didn’t exactly make the photo, but it sure helped and was worth the wait.

My Favourite 3 Cameras

Sony NEX-7 16mm exif data Rob Moses

I had the Sony Fisheye Converter on for the above photo.

Although I have been known to shoot other brands of cameras here and there, Canon is my favourite. These 3 cameras in particular are my current favourites. The Cameras are a Canon 5D Mark iii, 1D Mark iii & a 6D. I know it’s kind of silly to have all 3 of these (not to mention all the other cameras I have), however they all have their uses where for me they shine the best. The 5D Mark iii is good for just about everything and I use it as such. The 1D Mark iii is great for sports when you need that quick frame per second (10 fps) and the 6D is nice to just walk around with and share photos quickly via the cameras wifi. They are all great cameras and if I had to choose just one it would be a very difficult choice.

Floating Around in the Fog

Camera: Canon 5D mark iii & 16-35L ii at 35mm ~ Settings: f/2.8 – 1/400th – ISO 2500

It has been rather foggy around Calgary these days. Yesterday I decided to take a picture of myself on the path in front of my house. My original idea was to shoot a photo of me just standing in the path with my camera and I did that. When reviewing the photos on the cameras LCD I thought the photo could use a little extra zip, and the idea to jump popped into my head. I think the levitating look adds a real fun element to the shot.

Camera: Canon 5D mark iii & 16-35L ii at 35mm ~ Settings: f/4.5 – 1/125th – ISO 2000

I used a Canon RC-1 remote on a 2 second timer to trigger my camera which was on a tripod behind me. I shot about a dozen of these, because I had to make sure I jumped right at the perfect time to be in the air when the shutter clicked. I also didn’t want my clothes to look like they were flapping around either. At first I was wearing a hoody on while doing this, but it just didn’t look right. It was only after the fact that I noticed my shirt matched my lens haha. Just good luck there.

As for the second shot, since I was clearly taking up the whole path way I had the opportunity to say hello to a few people from the neighbourhood. I snapped a quick shot of this friendly guy and his dog as they walked by. Nothing like getting in people’s way to spark up a little dialog. 😉

Scattered Sky

Camera: Canon 16-35L @ 35mm ~ Settings: f/18 – 1.3 seconds – ISO 800

Yesterday when I was on my way home I noticed the sky looked a little scattered. I thought it was worth stopping to grab a quick picture, so I did just that. I didn’t feel like dragging out my tripod and setting it up, because I was afraid the sun would completely go down and I’d lose all the colour in the sky while doing it. So I just place my camera on a ledge and used one of my fingers under one side to level it off and let the shutter go. Who needs Manfrotto when you got ManPhoto tripod ;).

Note: I don’t really recommend this technique for long exposures, if you got the time just use your tripod.

Street Photography Video

Yesterday I went to do some street shooting by the river here in Calgary and I decided to make a video while doing it :). If your interested in street photography you might like this.

Random Trees in the Sky

I was out shooting a house yesterday (for real estate) and decided to get some shots of the park across the street. While I was in the park I randomly decided to point my camera straight up and take a shot. It’s not really my kind of thing, but it’s not bad :).

Ridiculously Wide!

I rarely shoot this wide because it looks like all the buildings are falling into each other haha. However, if you want all the buildings in one shot so close, there isn’t much choice. I shot this one in Chinatown in Calgary, Alberta Canada.

A Walk in Chinatown

I was in Chinatown the other day here in Calgary and I took a few street shots. I decided to shoot 35mm just to mix things up a little and force my self to get a little closer to my subjects. I definitely prefer 50 over 30, but it’s fun to get a little closer every now and then.

My Random Car

This is just a random snapshot I took of my car one evening when I was out for a skyline shot. It is a rather noisy picture, so I figured it would be salvageable in black and white :).

Chilly Skyline

I took this yesterday around 5pm and all though it looks rather nice out, I can assure you it was very cold! I was only out of my car for about 5 minutes before my hands started shaking! haha. I figured that was my cue to head back to my car :).

New Car!

I picked up a new car yesterday! 2014 BMW X3! Oh man, what an upgrade from my old 2011 BMW X3 haha ;). At first I was going to go to a parking garage with a glass building behind it and shoot off camera flash, but I was in this neighbourhood so I thought I’d do a little HDR action with the skyline in the background. I’ll get that other picture sometime soon here while the car is still nice and new.

Studio Time with Mr. Blackman

A couple of days ago I was sitting in my office editing photos when I got a text message that read “Hey Rob, you still in Calgary?” I quickly replied with a “Yes” and “Who is this?” haha. To my delighted surprise it was my old buddy from Toronto Damian aka Mr. Blackman. Damian said he was in town and going to be recording a song at Red Tree Records & Studio and invited me to come hang out. Naturally I went down to see my old pal and I took a couple of pictures while I was there :).
