Oh Deer Vernon

Camera: Canon 6D & 70-200mm f4 IS at 200mm ~ Settings: f/4 – 1/500th – ISO 320

Yesterday I hopped on a little plane and flew out to Vernon, BC Canada. My parents in-law live in Vernon and I met up with my wife and kids who were already here. No longer then 30 minutes after arriving at the house my son told me to come take a look out in the back yard. To my wonderful surprise I saw this beautiful creature standing at the bird feeder having a nice little snack from him self haha. I quickly snapped a picture with my phone (insurance) and then bolted for the guest bedroom for my camera. I swapped the lens and went burnning back! Thankfully I was able to cap this shot off before he decided it was time to bounce :).

A Family in the Fog

Last weekend when it was all foggy in Calgary I did a shoot with a nice family. I wasn’t so sure about the foggy weather for such a shoot, but after seeing the photos I really like them because the fog provided a unique backdrop. Unique to Calgary anyhow, since it’s not always foggy around here. The last picture I find just wonderful because the little girl on the left is doing what exactly what a little rascal of a littler girl should be doing in a family picture :P.

All photos shot with a Canon 6D with a 50mm 1.4 & 24-105L

Floating Around in the Fog

Camera: Canon 5D mark iii & 16-35L ii at 35mm ~ Settings: f/2.8 – 1/400th – ISO 2500

It has been rather foggy around Calgary these days. Yesterday I decided to take a picture of myself on the path in front of my house. My original idea was to shoot a photo of me just standing in the path with my camera and I did that. When reviewing the photos on the cameras LCD I thought the photo could use a little extra zip, and the idea to jump popped into my head. I think the levitating look adds a real fun element to the shot.

I used a Canon RC-1 remote on a 2 second timer to trigger my camera which was on a tripod behind me. I shot about a dozen of these, because I had to make sure I jumped right at the perfect time to be in the air when the shutter clicked. I also didn’t want my clothes to look like they were flapping around either. At first I was wearing a hoody on while doing this, but it just didn’t look right. It was only after the fact that I noticed my shirt matched my lens haha. Just good luck there.

As for the second shot, since I was clearly taking up the whole path way I had the opportunity to say hello to a few people from the neighbourhood. I snapped a quick shot of this friendly guy and his dog as they walked by. Nothing like getting in people’s way to spark up a little dialog. ;)

I was out the other day shooting photos with my Nikon D300s and an old lens that has kind of a so-so reputation. The lens is a circa 1986 – 87 Nikon AF 70-210mm F4. I personally like the lens, but I have a thing for shooting photos with funny old lenses :).

Anyhow, just as I was enjoying the view of the city, this girl stopped near me and decided to do the same while drinking her coffee. That building behind her is called the “Saddledome” and it is where the local NHL Hockey team (The Calgary Flames) plays.

When I lived in Toronto, we called these hotdog vendors “Street Meat” haha. I’m not sure what they call them in Edmonton, but I’m sure the Street Meat is just as good :). The dome of windows behind the people buying hotdogs is the entry to the subway station. Edmonton got it right on when they decided to put the subway underground downtown straight off the bat. Calgary on the other hand put the train above ground and down a main street downtown. The city said they would put it underground at a later date,,, right! Ya that’s not EVER going to happen. Good job, whoever’s idea that was. Sure would be nice to be in a warm underground subway station in the middle of one of Calgary’s very long and cold winters!

I really love old buildings like this. There are not many of these beauties left in Alberta. I’m not a proper Albertan, so I’m not sure what the story is with all the old buildings. I am assuming they just tore them all down to make way for the new ones. In any case, it is a real shame there are not more like this, because it had a lot of character to a city.

I was out there shooting photos again yesterday and while I was getting some shots from the top of a parking garage I decided to snap a little selfie for myself. Gotta show my funny looking face around here from time to time ;).

The 2nd photo was from another day. I had the sunroof of my car open one day and while I was sitting in traffic I looked up out the roof. I thought it looked kind of cool, so I grabbed the camera sitting on my passenger seat and snapped a quick shot off before traffic started moving again.

These types of newer style condos are everywhere in Vancouver, BC. When I was editing this photo my wife walked by and even asked me, “That’s crazy, is that Vancouver?” haha. Even though I agree it is very Vancouver’esk, this is indeed in here in Calgary.

Note: I made a rookie mistake in these shots. I had turned the iso way up for another photo and forgot to turn it back down before shooting these. WHOOPS!

So a couple of weeks ago I got a message from my cousin Ryan whom I haven’t  heard from in a while. Turns out him and his girlfriend Kelsey were going to be coming through town and he wanted to meet up. Of course I will always make time for friends and family (and strangers haha) coming through Calgary, but in this case it was going to be even more fun then usual. As it turns out Ryan and Kelsey were going to be spending some time in Banff and they wanted to shoot some photos! Yay! I love Banff and I love shooting photos, bonus ;).

I met up with Ryan and Kelsey last weekend and we took a little burn around the town and shot some photos. I had a lot of fun on this shoot, because I know Ryan and even thought I had just met his girlfriend for the fist time, it felt like I already knew her. The comfortably factor made for a very easy going and fun shoot! Here are some of the pictures we got.

I shot this photos the other day on my way home from work. It is a look down 1st Street SW downtown in Calgary. These types of pictures are always fun for me, because I love the city and watching people buzzing around. The picture has a nice mix of different types of architecture and a few little things here and there that hold my attention, so I enjoy looking at it. I hope you do too!

Bit Of A Challenge

Camera: Canon 6D & 70-200mm f/2.8 at 200mm ~ Settings: f/11 – 1/320th – ISO 400

So the other day fellow photographer and blogger Steve Boer (www.steveboer.com) passed on 5 day black and white photo challenge to me. The idea is to post black and white photos for 5 days straight. I love black and white, but there aint no way I’m posting 5 black and white shots back to back haha. So I told him I’d post one for one day and that’s the best could do. However, I decided to post 2 (on one day).

With all that said, onto the pictures. These two photos were clearly shot on different days. The first one was shot on a more mild day and the 2nd one a much more cold day (yesterday). You could probably guess from the snow on the ground and the guys ski goggles! lol. This is how I feel about biking, if it’s so cold you gotta strap on the ol ski goggles to take a cruise, then it’s to damn cold for biking! ;).

Thanks for stopping by, Rob

PS, Although these types of challenges are fun, I probably won’t make a habit of doing them when passed on to me. Just an FYI so I don’t hurt anyones feeling in the future.
